Job description
The Operations Control Centre in Group Infrastructure and Operations (GIO) is recruiting an Incident Manager. You will be one of a team of Incident Managers who will have overall responsibility for identifying and managing a Major IT Incident (MI). The main aim is to restore normal service operation as quickly as possible and minimise any adverse effect on business operations. This ensures that the best possible levels of service quality and availability are returned and maintained. Defra and the Environment Agency have a user base of approximately 26,000 users. When a Major IT Incident is declared, it is important that service is restored as quickly as possible. You will help ensure that key services for Defra users and the general public are available.
The Incident Manager forms part of the Service Design and Transition teams, when new services are introduced into the live environment. This ensures that all Incident Management queries are addressed at design and implementation level.

Responsibilities
- Confirm classification of an incident as a Major Incident or Priority.
- Manage and own the Major Incident through to service restoration in conjunction with our suppliers.
- Coordinate effort on the incident between support teams, delivery teams and customer.
- Establish and drive technical recovery plans with support teams.
- Provide timely and accurate updates to GIO Stakeholders.
- Ensure that all incident recovery activities and times are documented in the associated incident record(s).
- Monitor the progress of lower‑priority incidents and ensure that the Service Desk and resolver teams consistently adhere to Defra’s Incident Management procedures.
- Work with Projects to ensure that any new services are delivered in a state where they can be fully supported within the BAU environment and adhere to the Incident Management Process.
Skills and experience
- A knowledge of IT and Incident Management.
- Evidence of leading teams across boundaries and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience of using ServiceNow or similar incident management ITSM Tools application.
- Evidence of communicating to and managing stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, levels of seniority and with variable knowledge of IT.
- Working knowledge of Change and Problem Management processes.
- Competent running and controlling conference calls and meetings.
- The ability to work within a fast-paced environment while making quick judgements under pressure.

Location
As part of the pre-employment process for this post, successful candidate(s) will be able to agree a contractual workplace from those locations listed in this advert. The agreed contractual workplace is then the substantive and permanent place of work for the successful candidate(s).
Where the location is ‘National’ the successful appointee should discuss and agree an appropriate contractual location in line with both Defra’s location policy and site capacity, prior to proceeding with pre-employment processes.
The agreed amount of time spent at a workplace for this post will reflect the requirement for Civil Servants to spend at least 60% of their working time in an organisation workplace with the option to work the remaining time flexibly from home. Further Information

Salary
New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band. The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
