Job Summary

Working in a team of Infrastructure Engineers (Network), the Infrastructure Engineer (Network) supports and maintains network infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy.

At this role level, you will:

  • ensure services are delivered and used as required
  • work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services

Reporting to the SEO Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Network), the Infrastructure Engineer (Network) will help support the administration of a large and diverse network estate. You will work closely with other IT teams, support engineers, and application owners to deploy and support infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and services to the public.

The Infrastructure Engineer (Network) is primarily responsible for the technical analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting of IT infrastructure in dedicated and virtualized environments, to support mission critical business processes for the organisation. You will provide technical support and assistance to infrastructure and transition projects, focussing on excellent prioritisation, responsiveness and customer service.

Job description

The Infrastructure Engineer (Network) is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust, secure, and scalable network and infrastructure solutions. This role ensures high availability, performance, and security across datacentre, cloud, and network environments, supporting business-critical services and projects.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of datacentre-hosted physical and virtualized infrastructure, as well as public cloud-hosted components and systems
  • Build, configure, and support infrastructure solutions following new and established designs, adhering to industry best practise, modern standards, and product lifecycles
  • Implement, monitor, and support security controls in line with information security requirements, working with system architects and security teams to mitigate security threats within solutions and services
  • Collaboration and engagement with other service delivery teams, business application owners, suppliers and vendors, as applicable
  • Monitor supported systems, identifying and addressing potential performance and capacity problems to avoid impact to service
  • Produce and maintain infrastructure support technical documentation to a high standard to ensure consistent and repeatable operations within the team
  • Prioritise and diagnose incidents and requests, owning and managing assigned tickets to completion, following standard processes and procedures

The successful candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate a working level of experience of IT infrastructure concepts and support of mission critical enterprise IT systems utilising skills and technologies. Specifically HPE switching and routing technologies, including Wi-Fi Access Points and ClearPass.


Person Specification - Essential Criteria

  • Strong knowledge of networking technologies (IP, VRF, NAC, routing, switching).
  • Experience with datacentre and cloud infrastructure (Azure).
  • Knowledge of ITIL processes including incident management, request fulfilment and change management.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Operational history of working within a BAU team in a dynamic environment.

Recruitment Process

CVs will be used alongside the statement of suitability to inform the overall score given to the candidate at sift stage. Only the essential criteria as set out in the advert under Experience is being assessed at application stage.

In the event of a large number of applications, an initial sift will be conducted against the CV. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or progressed straight to interview.

A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months.

Technical Assessment

If you are successful at sift stage, you will receive a technical scenario for you to prepare a response ready for your interview. The technical scenario and instructions will be emailed to you at least 5 days before your interview.

Location

Candidates will be expected to frequently travel to Welsh Government offices across Wales and datacentres in South Wales. Systems will be required to be maintained outside of business hours including weekends.
