The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport (DfT), and our purpose is to improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of aircraft accidents and serious incidents and promoting safety action to prevent recurrence. We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK and overseas, where there is a UK interest.

Job description
As part of a multi-disciplinary team, your primary role will be to determine the engineering factors in aircraft accidents and serious incidents. You will conduct the investigation of all engineering aspects, from the initial ‘on site’ examination phase to the detailed forensic examination of evidence culminating in the production of detailed reports and Safety Recommendations.
Due to the nature of AAIB operations, you will be exposed to situations, information and material of a sensitive or traumatic nature which may be distressing. You will be required to speak with potentially traumatised accident victims and witnesses, as well as bereaved relatives, using tact and compassion. It is essential that applicants consider these requirements before applying for the post.
You must be capable of working in a wide range of potentially challenging environments worldwide, including remote terrain and possibly at sea, sometimes at short notice.
It is important that you are physically able to carry out work in the challenging environmental conditions that can exist on aircraft accident sites, and able to travel to accident sites, sometimes in remote locations.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
- Deploying at short notice to civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents within the UK or worldwide.
- Conducting investigations in the UK, including occasionally in the UK’s Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.
- Supporting foreign safety investigation authorities in their work.
- Producing reports into the engineering factors and organisational aspects of an event and promoting action to improve safety.
- Keeping the families of victims of fatal accidents informed of the progress of an investigation and briefing them on the findings and conclusions.
- Giving technical evidence at coroners’ inquests to explain the findings of a report.
- Identifying safety issues and encouraging safety actions or making safety recommendations to address them, sometimes at short notice.

Person specification
Essential qualifications/licenses:
- A valid passport for international travel
- A full UK driving license
- You will need to hold an Aerospace Engineering or other relevant technical degree.
OR
Chartered Engineer status or experience that would meet the Engineering Council UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) requirements for Chartered Engineer status (Further details of the Engineering Council UK-SPEC requirements can be found here)

Required experience:
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- You must have extensive and current professional aviation or aerospace engineering experience, which will be assessed during the sift of applications.
- You must have knowledge of aircraft operations and aviation regulations and:
- Proven analytical capability with a wide breadth of knowledge across a wide range of aircraft engineering subjects, regulatory requirements and aircraft operations.
- A demonstrated ability to work with stakeholders at all levels and the ability to communicate decisions and ideas in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrable ability to apply sound judgement and strong leadership skills and to work under pressure either individually or as part of a multi-disciplined team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, be capable of producing accurate and clear written reports and have good presentation skills. You will be computer literate.
Additional Information
Due to the nature of AAIB operations, the successful candidate will be exposed to situations, information and material of a sensitive of a sensitive or traumatic nature. You will also be required to use tact and compassion when meeting the victims of accidents, bereaved relatives and witnesses, and when working with colleagues in stressful conditions. It is essential that you consider how you would react to these aspects of the role before applying.

Training
You will be required to complete six weeks of training on a residential course to learn the basics of accident investigation and, throughout your employment, will be encouraged to learn about new techniques and develop your professional and investigation skills.
You will undertake training to enable you to carry out your role safely in a wide range of environments, including offshore and in mountainous terrain.
You will also be encouraged to develop general aviation flying experience and will have the opportunity to work towards gaining a Private Pilot’s licence if you do not already have one.
Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
You will be contracted to work 37 hours each week and expected to spend at least 60% of your working time either at the AAIB offices at Farnborough House or at other locations on official business.
The AAIB site is in a semi-rural area and is not served by public transport, but there is a secure car park on site together with covered bike sheds and changing facilities with showers.
There will be occasions where you will be required to travel internationally, sometimes at short notice. The role requires the position holder to be on-call for deployments anywhere in the world at short notice, except whilst on Annual Leave or by mutual agreement with your line manager.
A roster is managed to ensure there will be periods where you are less likely to be called. An allowance for being on call is included as part of the basic salary.

At sift, you will be assessed against the following success profile elements:

Stage 2: Wellbeing and Traumatic Stress Risk Reviews
Due to the nature of AAIB operations, the successful candidate will be exposed to situations, information and material of a sensitive or traumatic nature. Applicants will be required to participate in a wellbeing and traumatic stress risk review in advance of their assessment day. The outcome of this risk review will not determine whether you progress to Stage 3. It will include a questionnaire which is followed up by a short telephone call with a psychologist. The Wellbeing and Traumatic Stress Risk review will take place from the week commencing 11th May 2026.
Stage 3: Assessment Day
