Job summary

The SIA is the organisation responsible for the regulation of private security. It is an independent, arm’s length body (ALB) of the Home Office, reporting to the Home Secretary, under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. The SIA’s purpose Is protecting the public through effective regulation of the private security industry and working with partners to raise standards across the sector. Its regulatory remit covers the whole of the United Kingdom.

The SIA has two main duties: the compulsory licensing of individuals undertaking designated activities within the private security industry and the management of a voluntary Approved Contractor Scheme, which measures private security suppliers against independently assessed criteria.

SIA licensing covers security operatives who are in guarding, door supervision, close protection, cash and valuables in transit, and public space surveillance using CCTV, vehicle immobilisation (in Northern Ireland) and key holding. Licensing ensures that private security operatives are fit and proper persons who are properly trained and qualified to do their job.

We are looking for an Intelligence Development Officer to join our Intelligence Unit within the SIA. In this role, you will have a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of incoming intelligence, ensuring raw information is corroborated and developed into actionable intelligence. Working with our partners you will act on intelligence in a timely manner, ensuring any risks are identified and escalated through correct channels. Person specification

Essential

  • Experience of development and dissemination of intelligence ideally in a law enforcement or regulatory regime.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to form strong, positive working relationships both inside and outside of the organisation.
  • Understanding and experience of legislation relating to the control and processing of information, particularly the UK GDPR/Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and the Human Rights Act.

Desirable

  • Practical knowledge of intelligence software, ideally i2 and including iBase, Analyst Notebook.
  • Holder of a nationally accredited qualification in Intelligence.
  • Hold or be able to work towards obtaining the College of Policing Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) certification within 18 months of joining the organisation.
  • Understanding of The Private Security Act 2001 and the SIA’s regulatory products.

Selection process details

Please note: SIA does not utilise success profiles at interview stage.

After submission of the first stage of your application, you will be invited to complete an online Civil Service Judgement Test. If you successfully pass the test, you will be invited to complete the final stage of the application.

Please complete the online test as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended). The closing date for the test is 23:55 on 9th March. 2026. If you fail to complete the online test before the deadline, your application will be withdrawn. Note that after passing the test, you will be required to complete the rest of the application before the closing deadline, so please allow yourself adequate time to complete the full application.

Guidance for the test will be available when you are invited to take the test. The tests are administered online and accessed via the Civil Service Jobs website.

Our online test supplier will be performing scheduled maintenance between 4pm and midnight on 1st March 2026 and again between 4pm to 7pm on 8th March 2026. You will be unable to access tests during this period.

If you are in the middle of a test when the maintenance begins, your progress will be paused. You will be able to resume your test from where you left off via your application centre once the downtime has ended. Please note that you will not be able to launch any new tests while the system is offline.

A reserve list of successful candidates will be kept for a maximum of 12 months. Should another role become available within that period you may be offered this position.

Due to business requirements, this role is only available full-time.

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.
