We believe that every child in Year 6 deserves to arrive at secondary school feeling confident, capable and known. At Yarborough Academy, our approach to intervention isn’t about pulling children out of the classroom for something separate. It’s about making sure the right support is woven into their school day by someone who is genuinely part of the teaching team.
We’re looking for an Intervention Practitioner to join our Year 6 team, a new role, built around a simple idea: that the person delivering intervention should be as embedded, informed and valued as any other member of the team teaching those children.
What the role looks like
This role works in two ways, and you should expect to move between them fluidly, sometimes within the same day.
You’ll deliver targeted small-group work with identified pupils, planned in partnership with the class teacher, focused on closing specific gaps in reading, writing and maths.
You’ll also provide quality class cover so that the class teacher can withdraw to deliver intervention themselves, where their subject expertise or relationship with a particular group makes that the stronger option.
You’ll attend planning meetings, contribute to pupil progress discussions with specific, evidence-based observations, and use the same assessment and tracking systems as the rest of the Year 6 team. Intervention groupings aren’t fixed, they shift in response to data, teacher judgement and what’s actually working. If something isn’t landing, we expect you to say so, and we’ll adjust together.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need to be a qualified teacher. You do need to be someone who takes children’s learning seriously, builds strong relationships, and works well as part of a team.
We’re looking for someone who:
· Has a genuine passion for education and for helping young people succeed
· Can plan and deliver engaging, well-pitched learning, adapting in the moment when they need to
· Communicates clearly with colleagues, children and families
· Is confident working with assessment data and using it to inform what happens next
· Understands that behaviour is communication, and responds restoratively rather than punitively
· Is honest about what’s working and what isn’t, and is comfortable raising it
· Brings creativity, adaptability and resilience
GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths are essential. Experience working with children is desirable but not essential, what matters most is your approach.
What we offer
· A genuine place in a strong, collaborative Year 6 teaching team.
· Supportive mentoring and professional development, including training on intervention approaches, trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches
· A school culture built on relationships, honesty and high expectations
· A voice in shaping the role itself, this is new, and your observations and ideas will help it develop
· Clear pathways to gain Qualified Teacher Status, if that’s where you want to go
· A welcoming, inclusive school community that takes the wellbeing of its staff seriously
Yarborough Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants will therefore undergo Enhanced DBS checks as part of our Safer Recruitment Process.
