Job description
Are you passionate about people and eager to start your career in HR? We’re looking for an enthusiastic HR Apprentice to support our Colleague Experience team in creating a workplace where everyone thrives.
You’ll help deliver initiatives that improve employee engagement, reward strategies, and benefits, ensuring our policies align with staff needs and organisational goals. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learn from HR specialists, and make a real impact on colleague experience. At the end of this you will have a L5 CIPD qualification as a People Profession which aligns with associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
- Lead on the continuous improvement of DVSA’s employee benefits portfolio ensuring relevance, effectiveness and value for money
- Promote the benefits portfolio, identifying new ways to engage colleagues
- Act as joint agency lead for pay and reward policies, ensuring consistency across the Department for Transport family
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to design and implement HR solutions to improve colleague experience
- Produce reports and recommendations for senior stakeholders, highlighting key findings and future actions to improve colleague experience

Essential qualifications:
- Minimum Level 3 qualification in any subject (e.g. A level, T level, apprenticeship). We will not accept projected grades.
You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential qualifications at some point during the recruitment process. If you cannot provide evidence, your application will be withdrawn.
Required experience:
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- Good general understanding of HR functions, such as Reward, Resourcing and Attendance Management, etc. and familiar with Employee Benefits.
- Experience of building relationships with external suppliers
- Experience of advising staff on HR policies and processes to enable compliance.
- Delivering high quality outcomes that meet stakeholder needs whilst ensuring value for money.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders
- Analysing, interpreting and presenting data.
Additional Information
To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must:
- Be aged 18 or over.
- Have the right work in the UK.
- Hold a level 3 qualifications - we will not accept projected grades.
- Not be in full-time education.
- Not be in receipt of funding for other learning programmes at the point of enrolment for this apprenticeship.
- Have valid and eligible residency status and be resident in the UK for 3 years before the start of the apprenticeship. Full eligibility details can be found at Annex A. If you are not sure if you meet the residency requirements then please contact us before applying.
If you currently hold or are working towards a similar qualification of the same level or higher, then you will not be eligible to apply for this vacancy. In order to be eligible for our apprenticeship vacancy, any qualifications previously held or currently being worked towards must differ in content so that this apprenticeship provides substantial new skills. Additionally you must not already be over-qualified or over-experienced in this type of work.

This apprenticeship is expected to start June 2026 so the successful candidate will need to be available then.
This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.
The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
Occasional travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight stays.
