As part of the Infrastructure & Operations Services (I&OPS) directorate, the Storage, Backup and Cyber Recovery team are responsible for maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure that stores and protects DVLA's vital data and services. The team manages enterprise storage, backup and cyber recovery solutions, ensuring systems remain resilient, secure and recoverable in the face of evolving threats and operational challenges.

Job description
As a Lead Infrastructure Engineer, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management and support of the DVLA’s enterprise storage, backup, and cyber recovery platforms. The position is critical in ensuring business continuity, ransomware recovery readiness, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across all supported environments.
The Lead Infrastructure Engineering will provide technical leadership across storage, backup, and cyber recovery technologies while leading and developing a small team of Senior Infrastructure Engineers. Reporting directly to the Head of Storage, Backup & Cyber Recovery, the role will drive the delivery, resilience, and continuous improvement of the DVLA's data protection and recovery capabilities.
You will play a key role in shaping the direction of the function through both technical and people leadership and management. You will support the successful implementation of change initiatives, embedding improved processes, efficient ways of working, and robust operational support models that reflect the evolving service.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
- Oversee programmes and projects.
- Work with technical architects to translate the architectural designs into operations and support technical architects in operationalising the designs.
- Lead and direct infrastructure specialist teams in building, managing, supporting and maintaining solutions according to departmental policy (if taking a managerial path).

Person specification
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:
- You will be an experienced and highly motivated technology leader with a strong background in enterprise storage, backup, and cyber recovery solutions.
- You will possess extensive hands-on experience across storage, backup, and cyber recovery technologies, with proven expertise in supporting Dell Cyber Recovery Services (CRS), developing Cyber Recovery (CR) runbooks, and planning, executing, and validating backup recovery testing. You will be comfortable operating in a highly resilient, business-critical environment where data protection, cyber resilience, and recovery readiness are key priorities.
- As a people leader, you will be responsible for managing and developing a team of Senior Infrastructure Engineers, providing technical direction, mentoring, and support while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- This role will be suited to someone who is passionate about storage (Dell Unity, Isilon/PowerScale) and SAN (Cisco MDS), backup (Dell Data Domain, Dell Power Protect Data Manager, IBM Storage Protect), and cyber recovery technologies, (Dell Cyber vault technologies, Immutable storage solutions, Air-gapped recovery environments), and thrives in a fast-paced environment. You will bring an enthusiastic, proactive, and solution-focused approach, coupled with a willingness to lead, share knowledge, and embrace new technologies and ways of working.
- You will have excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels across the organisation. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills are essential, together with the ability to make sound technical decisions under pressure.
Additional Information
The role is part of the Government Digital and Data (or Government Security Profession Career Framework) profession and utilises an enhanced Capability–Based Pay Framework which provides access to a Digital and Data allowance.
The base pay is £57,515. In addition to this the role includes a Digital and Data allowance of up to £24,915.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements
Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week. Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 35 hours per week.
There is an opportunity to work as part an on-call rota, (one week in four) of which a non-pensionable allowance will be paid.
This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.
The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
