Job summary

The Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) is part of the Trading Systems Directorate. We bring together operational and policy expertise from DBT with advisory teams from Ministry of Defence and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Our mission is to promote global security through strategic export controls and to facilitate responsible exports.

This job is an exciting opportunity to work within a complex and business critical operational delivery environment, playing a vital role in ensuring that UK exports are consistent with our national and international obligations and standards. The role sits within the Licensing Unit of DBT’s Export Control Joint Unit, (ECJU). We regulate military and other sensitive exports such as dual-use items (goods, software, technology, documents, and diagrams which can be used for both civil and military applications). This is currently managed through two licensing systems. ECJU processes around 17,000 licence applications each year.

The role involves working in a fast-paced, operational delivery team whilst developing a good understanding of export control legislation. The job holder will have regular contact with colleagues in FCDO and MoD. There will also be frequent contact with exporters and various other internal and external stakeholders, either by telephone, in writing or in meetings.

Job description

  • Detailed checks of incoming licence applications, clarifying with the exporter where appropriate and applicable, and circulating to other government departments (OGDs) in a timely manner
  • Monitor progress of applications from OGD review to issue, updating exporters and escalating in line with unit procedures
  • Support and engage with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth handling of applications
  • Efficient and effective management of large volume case work in a high-pressure environment
  • Support with additional case work as required
  • Build knowledge and upskill in specialist case work areas
  • Contribute positively to Continuous Improvement initiatives within the department

Desirable criteria

The below criteria are desirable only. These will not be assessed throughout the recruitment process, but will be used in the event of tied scores between candidates.

  • Previous knowledge or experience of export controls is desirable, but we will provide appropriate training and support to the successful candidate as required.
  • We particularly wish to encourage applications from candidates with a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) background and from those who have a background in pragmatic problem solving and client relationship management.
