About this opportunity
Westmorland and Furness Council is proud of its strong and inclusive school system, and we are now seeking dedicated, community‑minded individuals to support this work as Local Authority Governors. Governors play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of schools, supporting school leaders, overseeing financial decision‑making, and ensuring that every child has the best possible start in life.
This is a rewarding and meaningful opportunity for those who want to contribute to their local community. No previous experience in education is required; what matters most is enthusiasm, integrity, and a genuine commitment to supporting young people. Whilst the Local Authority nominate candidates to these positions, the duty is to govern in the interests of the school, rather than advocate for the Local Authority.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for individuals who can bring sound judgement, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You will provide challenge and support to school leaders, help ensure that public funds are used appropriately, and act as an advocate for children, families, and the wider community.
This role suits people with good communication and problem‑solving skills, and those who are committed to improving outcomes for young people. You do not need specialist knowledge at the outset, as full training is provided, but you should be prepared to develop your skills and engage with the responsibilities of school governance.

Eligibility
Applicants must live or work within Westmorland and Furness and be aged 18 or over. A DBS check and eligibility declaration are required. Employees of schools who are eligible to serve as Staff Governors cannot apply for these positions.
Internal Applicants
Westmorland and Furness Council has an Employer Supported Volunteering Policy. Existing employees can have two paid days per year which could be used for this post, and can be taken flexibly.
Employees of Education and Inclusion, Legal and Litigation Services are not eligible due to potential conflicts of interest.
