The Department for Transport recognises the need for, and the opportunities provided by, innovative uses of new and novel data sources to better understand the challenges facing the transport network and provide insight into creating solutions to these challenges.

These exciting new Management Information Lead SEO roles will develop and enhance the capacity of the department to work with more real time management information. This will include both using existing data in new ways as well as identifying data gaps and bringing in new data sets, constructing new products and sharing these across DfT and outside.

Job description

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Engaging with colleagues across the department to identify and collate challenges which might be addressed by management information
  • Taking user requirements and translating them into management information products
  • Engaging with the data owners of management information across DfT to create proportionate data access to use existing data in new and novel ways
  • Identifying new and novel data sets which could be used to solve transport sector challenges
  • Creating new and novel products using management information and other data sets to solve departmental problems
  • Engaging with teams across the department to identify opportunities to share best practise use of management information
  • Engaging with Data Engineering and Digital Service colleagues to ensure that proposed products align with DfT’s ways of working

Person specification

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  • Significant experience of working with operational data sources, understanding the challenges of using them to provide management information that is constantly updating.
  • Being able to take user requirements and translating them into management information products
  • Experience of cloud based working, including storage data and management to balance user needs and costs
  • Experience of using cloud based analytical tooling, including using python or R, or demonstrable experience in another language and willingness to learn.
  • Experience of data visualisation in dashboards (e.g. PowerBI)
  • Experience in deployment of visualisation products across organisations and externally.

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

The selection process for this role will be:

Stage 1: Sift of CV and personal statement

Stage 2: Interview

Stage 1: Sift

At sift, you will be assessed against the following Success Profile elements:

  • Experience – you will be asked to provide a CV (unlimited wordcount) and personal statement (1000-word count). Please provide evidence of your Experience of the following:

1. Working with operational data and producing management information from constantly updating datasets.

2. Translating user requirements into effective management information products.

3. Working in cloud environments, managing data storage and balancing cost and user needs.

4. Deploying visualisation products across an organisation and to external users.

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift may be conducted using the lead Success Profile element. Experience point 1. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift or straight to interview.

The sift will take place week commencing 09 March 2026

Stage 2: Interview

At interview stage, you will be assessed against the following Success Profile elements:

The interviews will take place week commencing 23 March 2026
