Job summary

The NCA’s Major Crime Investigative Support (MCIS) function provides strategic and tactical support to front line policing and law enforcement throughout the UK and British Overseas Territories engaged in major crime, missing person and major incident investigations. Part of the Operations team within MCIS, Specialist National Advisers represent areas of law enforcement where in-depth advice or insight is most frequently requested.


The National Missing Person Adviser (Crime) acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within law enforcement in relation to Missing Person investigations with a potential link to crime and unidentified human remains. To lead the work of providing specialist missing person (crime) advice to UK Law Enforcement within the Operations Team of Specialist National Advisers


Please note this is a home-based/remote working role and it does not have a specific location. The role will require flexibility with travel to deploy nationally and internationally in support of the Major Crime investigators.

Job description

This role is both strategic and tactical whereby providing governance and leadership advice to Senior Investigating Officers (SIO’s) investigating missing person enquiries and advising on tactical issues relating to wider missing person related issues. You will be part of a team, providing advice and support to the most complex missing person enquiries and investigations. Additionally, providing national over-sight of missing persons policy and procedure.

Duties & Responsibilities

Critical part of the Operations Team within the Specialist National Advisers.

Liaising with law enforcement, both nationally and internationally on missing person and unidentified remains cases. Providing support and guidance around these cases ensuring that best practice is followed.

Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within law enforcement in relation to Missing Person investigations with a potential link to crime and unidentified human remains.

To support the development of national guidance and best practice for Law Enforcement (LE), by working closely with National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) leads for associated portfolios and the College of Policing.

To provide investigative support in relation to suspicious missing person and unidentified human remains investigations to other law enforcement agencies and associated government bodies and departments. Providing observations and recommendations, both dynamically, verbally and through the production of written reports, with due regard to timeliness and the potential impact of the advice.

Identification and dissemination of good practice nationally and internationally.

Leadership and management of the Centralized Analytical Team Collating Homicide Expertise Management (CATCHEM) Database.

Liaising with the NPCC Lead for missing, building and maintaining effective external partnerships, collaborating with other NCA units, wider UK law enforcement, international counterparts and government departments as well as civil society organisations.

Continual development of the Specialist National Advisers, ensuring the team remains at the forefront of missing person research, developing the officers’ skill sets and capabilities and finding new ways in which the team can provide enhanced services to policing.

Person specification

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Experience of working in complex major crime investigations

Experience of multi-agency partnership working within the law enforcement community

Demonstrate excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills, both written and verbally

Demonstrate the ability to present information clearly and brief at all levels

Good practical knowledge of the function and role of intelligence within policing investigations, including services provided by other agencies

Extensive experience in investigating missing person and unidentified human remains

Extensive experience in policing investigations

Experience and practical knowledge of missing person investigations and a detailed knowledge of current legislation, police and procedures of major crime investigation

Evidence appropriate interaction at all levels within the Police Service and other Law Enforcement agencies

Experience of analysis and problem-solving within investigative setting

Experience of multi-agency partnership working within the law enforcement community

Desirable Criteria

Assessment Outcome

Outcomes will be communicated via the NCA recruitment portal.
