Job summary

The Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) is the Royal Navy's Medical Centre of Excellence, bringing together scientists and medical professionals to improve the health of the UK Armed Forces.

The Submarine and Radiation Medicine Division at INM is responsible for the provision of submarine occupational medicine advice and radiation medicine advice to the Royal Navy and wider MOD, as well as to the National Poisons Information Service. The Civilian Consultant in Radiation and Occupational Medicine (CCR&OM) is a consultant occupational physician post within the Division.

The post-holder will be engaged in the provision of specialist advice in 2 main areas:

  1. Submarine medicine, providing advice on fitness for submarine service and diving, management of diving and submarine incidents and the environmental aspects of submarine operations.
  2. Radiation medicine (including both ionizing and non-ionizing). This includes advice on the medical aspects of exposure to radiation, the management of radiation casualties and fitness to work with ionizing radiation.

In addition to the core occupational medicine activities, there is also a commitment to teach on a variety of medical and non-medical courses at INM and to other units.

There are opportunities to engage with wider INM medical and scientific work (including work with a wide range of clinical, environmental, physiological and psychological specialists) and support wider RN Occupational Medicine outputs, including training of Specialty Registrars in Occupational Medicine.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week (10 Programmed Activities per week).

Job description

The work portfolio is broad and includes remote clinical assessments, occupational medicine advice, research activities, clinical governance and teaching. The main tasks include:

  • Occupational healthcare and specialist employability assessments for work with ionizing radiation, work in submarines and in diving.
  • Provision of Subject matter Expertise (SME) in radiation medicine to the RN and wider MOD and NPIS.
  • Teaching in radiation, submarine and diving medicine to clinical and non-clinical personnel.
  • Provision of advice on the medical aspect of exposure to radiation and diving and submarine incidents.
  • Participation in an on-call rota providing urgent and emergency advice on diving, submarine and radiation incidents.
  • Undertaking research and ‘horizon scanning’ into all medical aspects of radiation exposure.
  • Participating in departmental and INM clinical governance activities and in GMC required personal appraisal and revalidation.

Person specification

This vacancy is for a Consultant in Occupational Medicine or an individual who is within 6 months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training and is to enter on the Specialist register. You must hold an in date appraisal and revalidation as per current GMC requirements.

Evidence of Immunity to Hepatitis B is required.

Desirable Experience:

  • Desirable previous experience working in a military environment
  • Experience of working on submarines
  • Experience or training in submarine medicine
  • Experience or training in radiation medicine

Licences

Licence to practice with the UK General Medical Council and on the GMC Specialist Register for Occupational Medicine.
All qualifications/licences declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.

Qualifications

Medical Degree and Membership / Fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

Membership or Fellowship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (M/FFOM).
