As the authority for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine capability, the Submarine Directorate oversees one of the most complex and critical elements of UK defence. Covering everything from in‑service management to long‑term fleet modernisation, the directorate ensures the Submarine Flotilla remains safe, reliable, and ready to meet national security requirements.

You'll be based at HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe and a powerhouse of Royal Navy capability. It is home to amphibious ships, survey squadrons, submarines, and two-thirds of the frigate force. With its unique nuclear refitting facility, Devonport ensures the Fleet remains ready to support operations worldwide.

Job description

Are you ready to shape the future of nuclear infrastructure and ensure the safety, performance, and resilience of critical national assets?

We are seeking a highly capable and driven Engineer to play a pivotal role in managing Nuclear Safety Implicated (NSI) assets and overseeing the delivery of complex infrastructure projects. This is a unique opportunity to operate at the intersection of engineering, nuclear safety, and programme delivery within a high-hazard, highly regulated environment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the development and maintenance of the NSI Programme, ensuring asset lifecycles, replacement timelines, and nuclear safety case requirements are accurately captured and aligned to operational priorities.
  • Define and specify Design Authority requirements for nuclear infrastructure projects, including performance, safety, security criteria, and formal hold points to ensure regulatory compliance and robust design governance.
  • Act as the focal point for project initiation and delivery, overseeing key documentation such as business cases, project initiation forms, work instruction notices, and variation orders.
  • Track and monitor projects from concept through to completion, ensuring delivery aligns with programme timelines and escalating risks or delays appropriately.
  • Review and approve designs, modifications, and project deliverables, ensuring all work meets nuclear safety case requirements and defined acceptance criteria.
  • Support the governance, assurance, and continuous improvement of nuclear infrastructure, including participation in emergency response arrangements and the management of technical records.

Person specification

  • Hold a Level 4 qualification (or higher) in an Engineering or Science discipline, or have the equivalent relevant experience.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Member status with an appropriate professional institute, or be able to achieve within 12 months.
  • At least 3 years of Devonport Naval Base site familiarity and knowledge, or similar industry level such as in a high hazard industry or marine environment.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage complex stakeholders, influence decision-making, and ensure compliance with rigorous regulatory standards.
  • Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with a proactive and solution-focused mindset.

Qualifications

Hold a Level 4 qualification (or higher) in an Engineering or Science discipline, or have the equivalent relevant experience.

Memberships

Chartered or Incorporated Member status with an appropriate professional institute, or be able to achieve within 12 months.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement.
