Job summary

Home Office Digitaldesigns, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.
A Network Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of networking services according to the departmental policy and Home Office strategy.
You will work in a team of Network Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You will work with and support third parties to provide network services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.
Job description
As a Network Engineer, you will work closely with technical architects and external suppliers to deliver network solutions aligned to departmental strategy and standards. The position offers the opportunity to be involved across the full lifecycle of network services, helping to ensure they are robust, resilient and able to meet evolving business needs. Operating in a fast-paced, service-focused environment, the team plays a vital role in maintaining high availability systems and ensuring continuity of service for critical operations.
Key Responsibilities
Your main day to day responsibilities will be:
- designing, implementing, administrating and supporting network services
- resolving network issues impacting Home Office users, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements
- responding to incident reports, ensuring relevant prioritisation and detail to allow for effective investigation
- identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users
- investigating faults in networks, and advising on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures
- contributing to solutions designs, based on your understanding of the networking integrations points in the end-to-end solution, making sure that the recommended solution meets the functional and non-functional requirements, as well as Home Office standards.
Working Pattern
This role is available on a full-time basis. This role is also suitable for part-time working hours, with a minimum requirement to work 22.2 hours per week due to business requirements.
Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance.
Travel
Occasional travel may be required for business needs. Any associated costs will be reimbursed in line with Home Office policy.

Essential Skills
You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Network Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:
- networking concepts, switching, routing, firewalling and load balancing.
- maintaining focus on the whole life cycle of service delivery; from design, development, and delivery through to operations.
- dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing for problem resolution.
- demonstrating the ability to build effective partnerships with diverse teams across multiple locations and technologies.
- presenting verbal and written information clearly and accurately in language which meets the needs of the user and can adapt to stakeholders' reactions with flexibility.
