When the World Sleeps, Relationships Still Matter

Some of the most important moments in a child's life happen when the rest of the world is asleep. A child who can't switch off after a difficult day. A young person experiencing anxiety about tomorrow. A conversation that happens at midnight because that's when somebody finally feels ready to talk.

At Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, we're developing an innovative Edge of Care residential service built on a belief that residential care can be a powerful intervention in its own right. A place where children experience safety, families find space to breathe and relationships have the opportunity to heal.

This isn't a service designed around long-term placements. It's a service designed around children and their networks.

We're creating a relational and restorative environment where children remain connected to the people who matter most to them, while families receive the support they need to move through crisis and create sustainable change.

We're looking for a Night Care Worker who understands that care doesn't stop when the daylight ends.

We're looking for someone who can create calm when things feel overwhelming, provide reassurance when it's needed most and help children feel safe enough to rest, recover and prepare for the opportunities that tomorrow brings.

About the role
As a Night Care Worker, you'll play an important role in helping children feel safe, settled and cared for throughout the night. You will help create an environment where children can relax, sleep and recover, knowing that trusted adults are there when they need support.

You will:
  • Provide high-quality care and support to children and young people throughout the night.
  • Promote a calm, nurturing and safe environment.
  • Support children with bedtime, overnight and morning routines.
  • Build trusting relationships with children and respond sensitively to their individual needs.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents, risks and emergencies.
  • Follow care plans, behaviour support plans and risk assessments.
  • Complete accurate recordings and handovers.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure continuity of care.
  • Contribute to a culture where children feel valued, respected and understood.

While many nights may be quiet, some of the most significant moments can happen when a child simply needs somebody to listen, support them through a difficult time or help them feel safe.

In addition to the salary, this post attracts a Level 1 Unsociability Allowance, currently £4,314.82 per annum (pro rata for part-time hours).

About you
We're looking for people who understand that children's needs don't disappear overnight.

You will:
  • Be compassionate, patient and emotionally resilient.
  • Understand, or be willing to learn about, trauma-informed and relationship-based practice.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with children and young people.
  • Remain calm and reflective in challenging situations.
  • Demonstrate sound judgement and professional curiosity.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.
  • Work effectively as part of a wider team.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Hold a Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England), or be willing to achieve this within the required timescale.

Most importantly, you'll understand that feeling safe at night is something many children take for granted, and you'll play a vital role in making sure children in our care never have to face the night alone.

To learn more about the role and what we're looking for, please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification in the Supporting Documents section.

Why join us?
Because opportunities to help build a new service don't come around very often.

You'll join a team developing an innovative Edge of Care model that puts relationships, families and positive change at the centre of practice.

In return we offer:
  • A supportive and ambitious leadership team.
  • A comprehensive induction and training programme.
  • Regular supervision and reflective practice.
  • A multi-disciplinary environment where you have the support you need.
  • Opportunities to develop your skills and progress within residential care.
  • Support to achieve the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare where required.
  • A strong commitment to staff wellbeing.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays.
  • Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • A range of employee benefits and discounts.

Most importantly, you'll work alongside people who care deeply about children and are committed to doing residential care differently.

Think this could be the right opportunity for you?
If you want a career where your presence, patience and compassion can make a genuine difference to a child's life, we'd love to hear from you.
