Job description
As an Operational Support Officer for Census 2031, you’ll become part of a team that pulls together to deliver something that touches the whole country. In this role, you’ll support field staff, solve problems, and help ensure every household is represented. You’ll meet great people, learn about different parts of the organisation, work closely with suppliers, and gain insight into how other industries operate. The Operational Support role can have a wide range of responsibilities and will require the ability to support the team leads and wider teams in the day-to-day activities.
You will be responsible for administrative tasks, operational management, improvement of processes and ensuring effective running of operational services and delivery.
Working to the Head of Field Operations Service Group Owner for Census Field Services, you will provide operational support across the 4 key functions of the branch:
- Field Operations (Household and Tech)
- Field Operations (Communal Establishments)
- Logistics and field support
- Recruit, Pay and Train
Responsibilities:
- Understand and use data to inform work and drive performance and improvements to systems or services.
- Undertake secretariat support specific to the certain product or service.
- Responsible for agenda coordination, meeting schedules and distribution of notes & actions, ensuring the key actions are followed up and monitored through agreed systems.
- Coordination of team shared mailboxes and organising the associated SharePoint sites as a site owner.
- Managing and editing user access for systems and SharePoint.
- Cross checking data and information to ensure work is accurate, query resolution where required.
- Taking notes and prepare documentation for ad hoc meetings as required.

Stage 1 – Application
The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, CV, skills, experience, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.
A personal statement is required at application stage, the maximum wordcount allowed is 1250 words, which should not be exceeded. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion listed in the person specification. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Please note that Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage of the application process.
In instances where a high number of applications are received, the sift pass mark may be adjusted, and candidates will be invited to interview based on merit order, i.e., those with the highest scores.
Stage 2 – Interview
If invited to interview, you will be assessed using techniques aligned with the Civil Service Success Profiles framework, covering all behaviours listed in the job advert and any required technical skills.
Interviews will take place via Microsoft Teams.
Our main locations are Newport (South Wales), Titchfield and Darlington.
A reserve list may be held for a period up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made.
