Job summary
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution, and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime, and migration.
The primary purpose of Social Surveys Directorate (SSD) is to provide high quality data that underpins core National Statistics and the wider UK statistical system. While much of ONS is reliant on us for their outputs and statistical bulletins, the data we generate supports research, policy development and decision making across the wider public and private sectors, academia, and the general public. Social Surveys Directorate is also responsible for the overarching ONS Survey Strategy and for an ambitious portfolio including data collection, transformation and continuous improvement to better meet user needs through improvements in data quality, timeliness, efficiency and capability.
SSD is the largest Directorate in ONS, comprising approximately 2,000 colleagues, including the field communities, and split across six divisions.

Job description
The Operational Support role can have a wide range of responsibilities and requires the ability to support team leads and wider teams in day-to-day activities. You be responsible for administrative tasks, operational coordination, process improvement, and ensuring the effective running of operational services and delivery.
The role sits within the SSFC and SSTPC supporting functions, working closely with engagement and learning teams to provide operational support.
The postholder will support the smooth delivery of training courses, briefings, engagement sessions, and related administrative activities, ensuring these are well-coordinated and effectively delivered.
Typical Assignments
- Coordination of engagement activities – making room bookings, taking notes etc.
- Maintaining action logs
- Coordinating exit interviews
- Coordinating training feedback
- Producing management information from feedback, exit interviews and other sources to support area leads
- Supporting SOLD and Learning Partner teams with admin/booking of training and briefing sessions
- Oversight of shared inboxes
Key Responsibilities
- Using software and resources as a management tool to support production of MI and informing key stakeholders.
- Responsible for agenda coordination, meeting schedules and distribution of notes & actions, ensuring the key actions are followed up and monitored through agreed systems.
- Build and maintain good working relationships across forums to provide support.
- Coordination of team shared mailboxes and organising the associated SharePoint sites as a site owner.
- Managing and editing user access for systems and sharepoint.
- Cross checking data and information to ensure work is accurate, query resolution where required.
- Assist with implementation and transition to new systems.
- Taking notes and prepare documentation for ad hoc meetings as required.

For ONS the requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for 3 consecutive years immediately prior to applying and the department will consider eligibility by exception on a case-by-case basis. Civil Service Online Tests
Upon submission of Part 1 your application form you will be sent an invitation to complete a situational judgement online test.There will be full instructions on how to complete each test including an opportunity to practice before undertaking the actual test. These tests are not time limited.
If you pass a test, you will then receive a further invite to complete each subsequent test if there is more than one for this vacancy. If you fail a test your application will not proceed to the next stage.
If you pass all tests for this vacancy, you will be invited to complete the final stage of your application, this is where you will provide information such as your work history. Skills and experience and Personal Statement.
The assessment process at the full application stage will be based on your work history, skills, experience, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.
The personal statement required at application stage, has a maximum wordcount allowed of 1000, which should not be exceeded.
