    Summary

    What you'll do

Are you a legal professional with a strong interest in debt recovery and housing management and a desire to make a difference? Join our business development team as a Paralegal - Debt and become an integral part of our legal resource.

You'll provide crucial legal support to our operational teams on a range of housing management matters, with a particular emphasis on rent arrears, service charge disputes, and debt recovery. As a trusted and knowledgeable voice on legal matters, you'll work closely with resident-facing officers, tenancy sustainment and safeguarding teams, and wider operational colleagues to ensure cases are handled sensitively, proportionately, and effectively, while balancing resident outcomes with business risk.

    How you'll do it

You'll need to work well under pressure, delivering a 'can do' and high-quality legal support service in a busy environment where attention to detail is critical. You'll be supported by a friendly and collaborative legal team and will play an important role in empowering operational colleagues to make informed decisions.

    Specific duties will include:

    • Managing your own caseload to provide legal support to operational teams on escalated housing management matters, with an emphasis on money claims and debt recovery, including possession proceedings

    • Advising on and progressing cases involving rent arrears, service charge disputes, breach of tenancy and breach of lease, including associated enforcement action

    • Preparing, drafting and responding to all necessary legal documentation to a high standard, including pleadings, witness statements, bundles and internal reports with clear recommendations for decision

    • Confidently representing the business in external settings, including court hearings, mediation, multi-agency meetings and casework panels

    • Working effectively with panel solicitors where external legal involvement is required, ensuring cases are managed cost-effectively

    • Working collaboratively with, and offering coaching to, legal assistants and operational colleagues across casework, as required

    • Supporting tenancy sustainment objectives by ensuring legal escalation takes place only once reasonable proactive engagement with residents has been exhausted

    The ideal candidate

If not already qualified, there may be an expectation to study towards a professional qualification.

You'll provide proactive legal services help and advice to your team and the wider business. As the environment is extremely busy, we'll be counting on you to support your colleagues to deliver an excellent service. You'll also need to have good written skills and be very organised in order to meet deadlines and ensure the work of the team runs smoothly.
