Job description

HMPPS Band 5

The Corruption, Crime and Policing Unit (CCPU) leads HMPPS’ response to understanding and tackling ongoing crime threatening our prisons and the community. Sitting within the strategy function, the People Development Team supports CCPU colleagues to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to work safely, effectively, and professionally.

The team undertakes analysis and considers emerging threat data to forecast what learning needs will be and produces bespoke training and guidance products to fill these gaps.

We assess learning needs, draw on emerging threat data, and create tailored training and guidance to ensure our people are equipped for the challenges they face. We identify and promote internal and external learning opportunities, supporting continuous professional development through learning festivals, the online Hub, job shadowing, mentoring and more. We continue to look to new and innovative ways of sharing information and guidance to enable those who need it, to find it and learn from it.

The team owns and manages the NSG Online Hub, currently a single point of reference for CCPU staff. This will soon be expanded and rolled out nationally across HMPPS, providing all colleagues with accessible, up-to-date guidance and relevant signposting. We work closely with subject matter experts and external partners to design new provision and deliver bespoke training, including specialist awareness sessions and workshops.

People Development supports colleagues from recruitment through induction and ongoing CPD, helping them thrive and progress. Our approach prioritises wellbeing, and we champion a safe, inclusive, and supportive working environment. We are committed to upholding our HMPPS values in line with those of the wider Civil Service.

Our work is varied, meaningful and focused on doing ‘what works’ to support our operational teams and the frontline. We are collaborative, inclusive, and forward-looking—working together to shape the future of our service.

The post holder will:

  • Responsible for the creation, implementation and maintenance of specialist people development services, processes and products that underpin the business objectives of the unitincluding the online NSG Hub.
  • Responsible for triaging training requests for consideration and compiling replies to the originating requesters.
  • Manage administrative staff where required, including line management and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Manage resources to effectively deliver the activities within their area of responsibility and contribute to assessing their impact.
  • Provide people development information reports/data in line with governance and assurance schedules to help assess compliance and measure impact.
  • Support in the coordination and delivery of customer and stakeholder consultation/engagement in person, virtually and through correspondence.
  • Provide assistance to ensure that people development requirements are met and compliant with procedures (e.g. mandatory training completion, line management standards, EDIB compliance).
  • Provide support for relevant ad hoc work requested. This can vary in terms of volume and complexity, ranging from distribution of guidance material/information to helping to organise large scale events/workshops/learning festivals.
  • The duties/responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present and is not intended to be exhaustive. The job holder is expected to accept reasonable alterations and additional tasks of a similar level that may be necessary.
