Job summary

The Ministry of Defence, Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from cyber and digital transformation, police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, psychologists, storekeepers, and policy secretariat staff to support the British Army.

This position is located within The Army Training Centre Pirbright (ATC (P)). It is a role that offers challenges and high engagement with all staff across the establishment. ATC (P) is a fast paced environment to work in that has exciting opportunities available and provides pivotal support to all members of personnel.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Army Training Centre Pirbright (ATC(P)), a dynamic and fast-paced military training environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the operational support of the unit by being responsible for the daily operations of the pool and surrounding facilities, ensuring processes are in line with both Unit and Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) standards. The role involves facility safety management, supervision of staff and resources, and policy adherence. Additionally, where required, the pool manager is to provide training delivery (swim teaching) and lifeguard support.

Key responsibilities:

  • Daily Management - Manage the day-to-day operations of the Swimming Pool facilities to include visual water clarity checks, serviceability of lifesaving, and supporting equipment for the swimming pool, the rostering of lifeguards, and ensure all policy documents remain up to date in line with both the Establishments and the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) current regulation.
  • Building Custodian - Manage the facility on behalf of the OC P&RTC (Officer Commanding Physical and Recreational Training Centre) ensuring the facility is compliant with matters pertaining to Safety, Health, Environment, and Fire (SHE&F), contractors, equipment management, and oversee key inspections.
  • Poolside Maintenance. Responsible for overall daily cleanliness of the pool and surrounding facilities (poolside, changing rooms, and pool office). Conduct a weekly deep clean of the pool and surrounding areas. Additionally, perform daily checks on pool equipment, ensuring serviceability i.e., floats, noodles, and specialised equipment such as the pool hoover.
  • Programming - Oversee the weekly Pool programme in consultation with the P&RTC Training Coord and allocate pool staff to pool-based lesson activities. Furthermore, liaise with external users, as and when required to ensure the mandated pre-booking checks have been completed.
  • Meetings - Required to attend the P&RTC weekly Coord Meeting, attend Station SHE&F meetings, and Training Coord meetings.
  • Training Assurance - Oversee the delivery of National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) training in line with the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) standards, ensuring AAPTIs (All Arms Physical Training Instructors) / lifeguards remain in-date, current and competent in the delivery of NPLQ rescue techniques.
  • Training & Delivery - Where required, support in the delivery of pool-based training to recruits in support of the Common Military Syllabus (CMS), and or complete Lifeguard duties to ensure correct bathers to instructor ratios.
  • Maintain Training Compliance - Engage in regular Continues Professional Development (CPD) to remain RLSS compliant in swim teaching and lifeguarding.
  • Carry out duties commensurate with the appointment and MOD Civil Service grade required by the Line Manager or Chain of Command.

Person specification

Essential skills required:

  • Level 2 ASA / STA Swim Teacher qualified.
  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (RLSS)
  • Must be IT literate and be comfortable using the Microsoft Office 365 packages.
  • Must be able to work in a team and also under own initiative.
