Job summary

We are looking for people who are passionate about Engineering to join our community led team. You will work within dedicated engineering function as part of the wider Microsoft Power Platform team. Our goal is to push the threshold of platform capability, enable our community to have genuine impact within the Home Office and act as technical leaders within the wider public sector.

To enable digital transformation at scale across Home Office, we must empower our people to create appropriate solutions. With its focus on low-code development, the democratisation of Microsoft Power Platform will enable large numbers of ‘Business Makers’ to truly evolve the way we work and make best use of automation and AI to increase efficiency.

To support those Business Makers on their digital journey, we need to grow the central Power Platform Team engineering function. We must also support experienced development teams selecting Power Platform tooling for their projects.

Focussing on app, workflow and custom component development specifically. This position assists in taking a code first approach to extending our capability.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. Job description

The Power Platform Developer works on software components that form part of a product. You will be involved in designing, running and improving software that meets user needs.

You will lead on extending the platform to its limits while setting the benchmark for robust, reliable and accessible solutions. Setting patterns, templates and standards as an example to others will be a natural output of your work. The scope of your role will touch the wider Home Office and beyond as we aim to act as technical leaders throughout the wider public sector.

You will typically work under the direction of senior colleagues in your team while also leading on your own deliveries and guiding associate developers.

Tools and Technologies:

We are keen for Engineers to continue learning new technologies, we have a large range in the Home Office including:

  • Backend: SQL, C#, Node.js, Python
  • Frontend: PowerFx, JavaScript, TypeScript, React
  • Data: Dataverse, SharePoint Online, SQL Server
  • DevOps/Platforms: Microsoft Azure (platform), Azure DevOps pipelines Terraform, PowerShell
  • AI: Github Copilot, OpenAI

Person specification

The Power Platform Developer brings a mix of traditional development expertise with advanced experience of the Microsoft Power Platform and Azure. You’ll play a key role in designing, running and improving software that meets user needs. You will lead on extending the platform to its limits while setting the benchmark for robust, reliable and accessible solutions. Areas of development can include:

  • Complex Canvas apps
  • Model-Driven apps
  • Custom connectors,
  • PCF components
  • Power Automate
  • Plug-ins
  • Logic Apps
  • Function Apps

Main responsibilities

  • Delivering secure, reliable and scalable software undertaking a breadth of development tasks as a Power Platform SME.
  • Taking a blended approach to development using a code first approach were necessary to extend the platform.
  • Leading on roadmap initiatives taking ownership from POC to production.
  • Designing new software using appropriate tools in line with standards, proving designs through prototyping. For example, PowerShell scripting, re-usable app components, custom connectors, plug-ins, and PCF components
  • Reporting on system performance and supporting test activities; keeping documentation up to date.
  • Supporting services, you have delivered through regular maintenance activities, balancing your work with your leadership.
  • Applying your knowledge and experience to coach junior developers and ‘Business Maker’ as required.
  • Working with other engineers to deliver new capability, for instance improved CI/CD pipelines or test approaches.

Working Pattern

Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which an additional allowance will be paid in accordance with the Home Office policy.

Essential Skills

You’ll have a demonstrable passion for power platform development with the following skills or experience in:

  • Applying recognised design principles to build advanced Power Platform solutions which are modular, secure, and maintainable while validating designs through prototyping and iteration. (SWDN)
  • Proficient in developing using code to extend Power Platform functionality via custom plug-ins and PCF components, writing clean code, and following best practices for collaborative development and CI/CD workflows. (PROG)
  • Creating and executing automated tests for using tools such as Playwright and Test Studio to ensure quality and performance. (TEST)
  • Integrating Power Platform services with 3rd party systems securely and efficiently, and contributing to build and deployment automation through CI/CD pipelines (SINT)
  • Using secure modern database systems using at least one of Dataverse, MySQL, NoSQL, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL. (Data Management – DATM)
  • Taking ownership of issues and incidents in live services and following agreed practices to deliver service updates (ASUP)

Desirable

  • Knowledge of deployment and test automation via Azure DevOps and Playwright.
  • Experience of developing Logic apps and Function Apps.
  • Experience of developing app components and managing a component library.

Sift Stage

The sift will be held on theCV and Personal Statement. Please read the essential skills for this position carefully. We will only consider those who meet the listed requirements.

Interview Stage

Candidates reaching the required standard will then be invited to attend an interview. The interview will assess your technical skills (SFIA Framework) using technical and experience-based questions.

At the beginning of the interview, you will be assessed on your technical capability through a technical problem-solving exercise. We will provide you with the information in the interview and you will be asked to share your screen with the panel, so you can point out various aspects.

Sift and Interview dates

Capability allowance

The advertised role is part of the Home Office Government Digital and Data Profession. This role has access to a digital capability-based allowance. Applicants who are successful at interview will be invited to complete a Capability and Skills Assessment post-interview. The allowance values are set by the Home Office, subject to remaining in a qualifying role and are non-pensionable. This allowance is non-contractual, subject to an annual review and could be withdrawn at any time.​​

For both new entrants and existing civil servants, the total compensation offer is a combination of base salary and, if applicable, a capability-based allowance. The pay ranges for this role are National: £46,062 - £49,287 and London: £50,182 - £53,695. New entrants to the Civil Service will start on the pay range minimum. For existing civil servants, our policies on level transfer and promotion will apply.
