Job summary

The AI Security Institute (AISI) is the largest team in a government dedicated to understanding AI capabilities and risks in the world.

Our mission is to equip governments with an empirical understanding of the safety of advanced AI systems. We conduct research to understand the capabilities and impacts of advanced AI, and develop and test risk mitigations. We focus on risks with security implications, including the potential of AI to assist with the development of chemical and biological weapons, how it can be used to carry out cyber-attacks, enable crimes such as fraud, and the possibility of loss of control.

The risks from AI are not sci-fi, they are urgent. By combining the agility of a tech start-up with the expertise and mission-driven focus of government, we’re building a unique and innovative organisation to prevent AI’s harms from impeding its potential.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the centre of one of the UK government’s most high-profile and globally significant initiatives — the AI Security Institute (AISI).

We are recruiting two Private Secretaries: one as Private Secretary to the Director of AISI, and one as Private Secretary to the Chief Strategy Officer. Both roles carry the same core responsibilities; they differ only in which senior leader you support. Please state in your application if you have a preference for either role.

This role combines two equally important elements. First, you will deliver the core disciplines that make Private Office work well: excellent diary and logistics management, strong coordination, clear follow-through, and ensuring your principal’s office runs smoothly in a fast-paced environment. Second, you will operate as a trusted adviser to your principal, using your judgement to help manage priorities, strengthen briefing, identify issues early and lead important pieces of work on their behalf.

At its core, this role is about helping your principal use their time, judgement and influence where they can have the greatest impact. You will need to be equally comfortable handling the fundamentals of Private Office to a high standard and stepping up to contribute on complex, high-priority issues across AISI.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Strong organisational skills, with experience managing senior priorities, meetings, logistics and competing demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Sound judgement and the ability to work independently, prioritise effectively and remain calm under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand complex issues quickly and turn them into clear advice or briefing for senior audiences
  • Experience of coordinating work across teams and driving delivery or follow-through where ownership is shared or unclear
  • Ability to build trusted relationships quickly and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders
  • Resilience, initiative and adaptability in ambiguous or rapidly changing situations

Desirable criteria

  • Previous HMG private office experience, or experience supporting HMG senior leaders in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience of drafting briefing or advice for HMG senior decision-makers
  • Experience navigating Whitehall to achieve/deliver objectives
  • An understanding of AI safety and its importance in addressing the risks and challenges associated with frontier AI technologies

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Delivering at Pace
  • Seeing the Big Picture
  • Communicating and Influencing
