Southwark's highways projects are recognised across London as being of a high standard and exemplify the aspirations for transport schemes in the capital. An opportunity has arisen for an Engineer who would like to be involved in designing highways projects in our vibrant borough.
What You'll Be Doing
Working as part of the transport projects team you will be responsible for designing and managing the implementation of highways projects. Normal duties will include producing construction drawings and the management and coordination of contractors, ensuring the quality and safety of works on site and addressing and design queries.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing highways design schemes such as junction improvements, traffic calming, and public realm enhancements.
- Prepare clear and accurate AutoCAD drawings for design and construction purposes.
- Undertake site visits to collect data, verify existing conditions, and support design decisions.
- Monitor contractor activities on site and report on progress, quality, and compliance.
- Assist in coordinating works programmes and small-scale construction activities.
- Maintain organised project files, reports, and records in line with quality procedures.
What We're Looking For
You will be expected to be fully conversant with industry design standards and able to produce design drawings using AutoCAD. You will be responsible ensuring that the Highways service provides an efficient and effective service. The successful candidate will have a good eye for detail.
We are looking for someone with relevant technical experience, good organisational skills and a solid understanding of highways or engineering work.
You will bring:
- Relevant technical background: Strong evidence of working in a highways or engineering service environment, or a Level 3 or Level 4 technical qualification in Civil Engineering, Transport, Design or similar, or equivalent experience.
- Highways knowledge: An understanding of highways, transport and traffic design principles, along with awareness of London transport policies.
- Practical experience: Experience of working in a highways or engineering field, including site inspections, surveys, data collection, defect monitoring, highway maintenance or project delivery.
- Technical documentation skills: Experience of producing simple technical reports, drawings, schedules and related documentation, and interpreting site instructions, drawings and maps.
- Digital capability: Ability to use GIS, mapping tools or asset management systems.
- Communication skills: Ability to communicate operational and technical information clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Problem-solving ability: The ability to develop practical solutions within the constraints of the situation and make sound decisions based on available information.
- Planning and organisation: Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work, manage deadlines and work accurately.
