Nottinghamshire County Council is dedicated to serving our vibrant communities. We believe in the power of collaboration and connection, working together with communities and partners to improve lives across Nottinghamshire. Join us and be part of a team that is committed to improving population health, reducing health inequalities and creating healthier, thriving communities.

Are you passionate about improving health and wellbeing and making a difference to people’s lives?

For this full-time, permanent Public Health and Communities Practitioner role, you will have a particular focus on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, as well as Babies, Children and Young People public health priorities. You will be managing and delivering projects and workstreams that contribute to improving outcomes and reducing health inequalities across Nottinghamshire as outlined in the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy (JHWS), Best Start Strategy and Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention Strategy. You will also work flexibly across the wider Public Health and Communities portfolio, providing support to other priority areas in response to emerging needs and divisional priorities.

Working within a multi-agency environment, you will use evidence, insight and public health approaches to support effective decision-making and service development. You will work with communities, colleagues and partners across Nottinghamshire, contributing to needs assessments, evaluations and reviews, developing evidence-based recommendations and translating evidence into action. You will also support co-production with residents and communities, ensuring that their experiences and perspectives help inform and shape our work.

In this dynamic role, you will:

  • Manage and deliver Public Health and Communities projects and workstreams, using recognised project management approaches and working within agreed quality, time, resource and performance requirements.
  • Undertake and support specialist public health analysis, drawing on quantitative and qualitative information and contributing to health needs assessments, Joint Strategic Needs Assessment chapters, health impact assessments and health equity audits.
  • Support the commissioning and evaluation of Public Health and Communities services, including contributing to evidence-based service specifications, procurement, contract management and service reviews.
  • Develop strong relationships with partners and stakeholders, collaborating and influencing across organisations to deliver shared Public Health and Communities objectives.
  • Help tackle health inequalities, translating health information and evidence into recommendations, strategies and actions that support improved outcomes for Nottinghamshire residents.
  • Support co-production with residents and communities, helping ensure that local voices inform the development and delivery of Public Health and Communities activity.
  • Work flexibly across Public Health and Communities priorities, responding to emerging needs and supporting wider division-wide work where required.

To thrive in this role, you should have:

  • A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience, alongside knowledge and understanding of public health approaches.
  • The ability to analyse health needs using a range of information sources and to interpret and evaluate research and locally derived evidence.
  • An understanding of evidence-based approaches to reducing health inequalities, alongside knowledge of health promotion, the Building Blocks of Health and relevant government policy and legislation.
  • Experience of project management and working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
  • The ability to manage a varied workload, plan and prioritise effectively and deliver work to agreed timescales.

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely and influence a range of audiences.
  • Strong analytical and evidence-based thinking, with the ability to locate, interpret and evaluate information to support effective decision-making.
  • Effective partnership working, with the confidence to build relationships and collaborate in complex, multi-agency environments.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, enabling you to work with others to identify and implement effective and innovative solutions.
  • Sensitivity and integrity, including the ability to work effectively within a professional and political environment and demonstrate a clear commitment to equality and diversity.
  • Flexibility and initiative, with the ability to respond to changing Public Health and Communities priorities while maintaining high-quality delivery.

At Nottinghamshire County Council, we offer:

A place to belong: A friendly, inclusive workplace where everyone is valued.

Balance & belonging: Flexible working arrangements to support your wellbeing.

Community & connection: Opportunities to build strong relationships with colleagues, communities and partners.

Aspiration & action: Opportunities to develop your skills and experience while contributing to ambitious Public Health and Communities priorities.

If you’re ready to use your skills, evidence and ideas to make a real difference, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today and join Nottinghamshire County Council in working with our communities and partners to improve health, reduce inequalities and help Nottinghamshire thrive.
