Job summary

The Radon Group is a mix of both scientific and administrative staff working across three teams: Radon Dosimetry Team, Radon Programmes Team and Radon Services Team. This position is for an Admin Officer on a 0 hour bank worker contract, to provide administrative support to the Radon Group during periods of increased workload when delivering their services.

The main objective of the Services Team is to provide radon information and services to our customers. This involves communication via the telephone, email and through our website www.ukradon.org. The team also deliver the radon search and measurement services to a range of customers; householders,employers and landlords. The team are also responsible for the development, content and admin for the group website www.ukradon.org.

Job description

Main duties will involve participating in a selection of the day-to-day work of the Radon Group, maintaining a high level of accuracy, in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Within the Radon Group, the Radon Services team provides services, information and advice about radon for the public, including individual householders,industry and researchers.

The post holder will carry out set administrative tasks including:

  • Manual packing and unpacking of detectors
  • Manually handling and moving bulky parcels and packages with aids such as a hand trolley, between the ground floor storage area and the first floor, typically via the lift
  • Manually sorting small items such as detectors by hand, typically between 200 to 1000 pieces per day
  • Dealing with incoming paperwork and distributing it to other sections of the group
  • Communicating effectively within the team to ensure an excellent service
  • Helping to monitor stock levels
  • Liaising with colleagues within the radon team to manage the collation/delivery of the detectors
  • Check customer questionnaire responses in bespoke software. Data checking is manual, and requires a high level of thoroughness and accuracy.
  • Following office procedures
  • Carrying out routine quality assurance procedures.

The post holder may occasionally work unsupervised, carrying out straightforward functions such as detector packing and unpacking in accordance with
standard operating procedures.

The post holder will develop working relationships and communicate regularly with a wide range of individuals, internal to UKHSA. This will include:

Internal

  • Scientific staff in Department up to Group Leader
  • Administration staff in Department
  • Specialist staff in other groups/departments
  • Head of Department
  • Scientific staff in other Departments up to Group Leader

External

  • This role is not required to have any liaison with external customers or contacts outside of the organisation

Person specification

Essential role criteria:

  • 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent level such as O levels / functional skills ) including Maths, English or equivalent experience in an office role.
  • Knowledge of good customer care and experience of good customer service
  • Previous experience of working in an administrative environment using computerised data systems.
  • Experience of office based database entry work.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.
  • Clear communicator with good writing and data entry skills ensuring accuracy
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Good problem solving skills (e.g. prioritising)
  • Able to work on own initiative, organising and prioritising own workload to set deadlines

Desirable role criteria:

  • Understanding of Data Protection legislation

Eligibility Criteria - External

Location

This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Chilton (Didcot).

Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance.
