This is an exciting opportunity to join a friendly, energetic and supportive team at the heart of Royal Air Force People. We manage the careers of 30,000 RAF personnel, supporting those who deliver Defence outputs in the United Kingdom and around the world.

You will work alongside military personnel and fellow civil servants in a busy but rewarding environment where no two days are quite the same. Your contribution will help ensure that RAF personnel receive timely, accurate and professional career support throughout their service.

The role offers variety, responsibility and the opportunity to build valuable experience within the Ministry of Defence. You do not need to arrive with detailed knowledge of the RAF or military Career Management. We will give you the support and training needed to develop your confidence and succeed in the role.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

As an RAF Career Management Admin Support Officer, you will help the team deliver a professional and responsive service to RAF personnel and their managers.

Your work will be varied and may include:

  • supporting a range of Career Management activities and processes;
  • using digital systems to process information and support team outputs;
  • preparing and maintaining accurate records, correspondence and documentation;
  • communicating with RAF personnel, military managers and civilian colleagues;
  • responding to routine enquiries and directing people to the right source of advice;
  • supporting activities relating to assignments, appraisals, promotions and amendments to Terms and Conditions of Service;
  • identifying opportunities to improve the way the team works; and
  • providing flexible support across the wider Career Management team when priorities change.

As such, the exact balance of work may evolve according to the needs of the team, giving you the opportunity to influence your activity and gain experience across several areas, rather than being limited to one repetitive function.

Person specification

We are more interested in your attitude and potential than in whether you have worked in Defence before.

You could be a great fit for the role if you:

Previous administrative experience may be helpful, but detailed knowledge of the is not required.

Full role-specific training and support will be provided.

Essential Criteria

You must be able to demonstrate:

  • effective electronic and verbal communication;
  • ability to work collaboratively as part of a team;
  • good organisation and attention to detail; and
  • familiarity with Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams.

Desirable Criteria

The following would be useful but are not essential:

  • experience of providing administrative or customer support;
  • experience of handling records or sensitive information accurately and securely;
  • experience of using artificial intelligence to assist with basic, every day tasks.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

Selection process details
