Help residents recycle more, waste less, and support the rollout of new Food Waste Services for all Sefton Residents
We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Recycling & Waste Engagement Officers to join our Waste Management and Street Cleansing Team.
These new roles will play a vital part in helping residents improve their recycling habits, prepare for the upcoming 2026 Food Waste Collection service, and support the Council’s wider environmental commitments.
If you enjoy working outdoors, talking to people, solving problems, and making a visible difference, this could be the perfect role for you.
About the Role
As a Recycling & Waste Engagement Officer, you will:
Engage directly with residents
- Visit residents door-to-door to provide practical advice on recycling and waste services.
- Promote positive waste behaviours and help people understand what goes in each bin.
- Resolve questions, provide service information, and support residents to recycle more effectively.
Support behaviour change across the borough
- Identify and challenge incorrect recycling practices in a constructive, supportive manner.
- Work with residents to reduce contamination (wrong items) in recycling bins.
- Promote consistent good habits to improve recycling quality and reduce disposal costs.
Prepare residents for new services
- Help deliver the 2026 food waste collection rollout by distributing caddies, tagging bins, and explaining how the new system works.
- Encourage early uptake and record feedback to support successful implementation.
Carry out practical fieldwork
- Conduct bin and caddy checks, issue tags or stickers, and record contamination data.
- Carry out load sampling at depots to verify borough-wide contamination levels.
- Identify hotspot areas and work with the team to target interventions.
Deliver education and outreach
- Prepare and deliver presentations to schools, landlords, housing providers, and community groups.
- Promote recycling at events, community meetings, and engagement sessions.
- Represent the Council professionally, positively, and consistently.
You will be someone who
- Enjoys speaking with members of the public and can handle conversations confidently and politely.
- Is comfortable working outdoors in all seasons.
- Has strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Can work independently and as part of a supportive team.
- Is committed to environmental improvement and community engagement.
- Is organised, reliable, and able to record information accurately.
Experience in customer service, community engagement, education, waste management, or environmental services is helpful but not essential — full training will be provided.
What We Offer
- Full training in recycling services, operational processes, and behavioural-change techniques.
- Supportive team environment with ongoing professional development.
- Opportunities to contribute to borough-wide environmental improvement initiatives.
- The chance to see the positive impact of your work directly in the community.
