Wokingham Borough Council have an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Lawyer (Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) to join our in-house legal service specialising in Litigation, on a full-time, permanent basis.

As a Lawyer, you will have the opportunity to work on a range of interesting, high profile and rewarding cases, with the potential to explore other areas of law depending on work demands.

We are seeking a candidate with knowledge and experience in either Civil and/or Criminal Litigation, along with a willingness to learn and develop expertise in Employment Law and Practice.

The successful candidate will support an experienced Senior Employment Lawyer by advising on employment matters as a secondary area of work. While prior experience in Employment Law is preferred, it is not essential—comprehensive support and training will be provided to the right candidate.

As with all roles within the Council’s Legal Service, the candidate will also be expected to develop a working knowledge of Local Government Law to advise on governance-related matters.

You may have already worked within the public sector, but we also encourage candidates from the private sector, including the Legal Aid sector, as we often have before in other areas of practice!

Hybrid working - We work flexibly with most lawyers working primarily from home, although the successful candidate must be able to attend court where and when necessary, and attend our offices for in-person meetings based on business needs.

Key responsibilities:

  • Responsible for implementing a consistent, corporate approach to legal advice and acting as an expert advisor in respect to the law, best practice and procedure;
  • To assist the Principal Lawyer & Team Leader to deliver high performance within the relevant legal team
  • A senior officer of the relevant legal team taking a proactive role in ensuring that (i) the Council’s vision, values and objective are met and (ii) the LIGS service plan is delivered, both in accordance with the law and best practice
  • Be one of the professional experts for relevant area of expertise within relevant legal
  • To adopt best practice in the management of individual matters through the appropriate use of the Legal Services case management system and good legal practice management standards, including the use of appropriate software packages.

Candidate requirements:

  • Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives
  • Adaptable and highly organised to manage case load and projects
  • Knowledge of civil and /or criminal litigation with an ability to develop in the other areas as well as Employment Law..
  • Ability to work professionally and confidently in an organised manner with minimal supervision.
  • A competent IT user, team player and confident managing a wide case load
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of people both internally and externally
