Job summary

The Countermeasures Development and Evaluation Centre is based at Porton and has approximately 250 staff, performing a range of research activities, including high containment level work. The department’s work covers a broad range of projects involving vaccine and therapeutic, discovery, evaluation, development, and research.

The Antimicrobial Development, Discovery and Diagnostics (AD3) team sits in the Countermeasures Development, Evaluation and Preparedness Division in the Public Health Microbiology Directorate within the Chief Scientific Officer Group. Its work focuses on the discovery, development and evaluation of antimicrobial therapies directed at UKHSA priority pathogens, with a particular focus on AMR/emerging pathogens.

The post holder will provide specialist laboratory skills in support of the bacteriophage ‘integrated pathway’ programme, which is developing a phage service to support clinical use of phage in the UK (including an in-house phage library). The post holder will also contribute towards developing novel phage susceptibility testing methods and supporting UK-based phage manufacture.

Experience of working with ACDP2 pathogens and performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing is essential, with experience working with bacteriophage and/or working in a clinical laboratory desirable. A degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Biomedical Science, Microbiology, Biology) is essential, while an IBMS accredited degree, recent registration as a Biomedical Scientist or portfolio evidence of working towards Biomedical Scientist registration is desirable. Demonstrable interest in the discovery or development of novel antimicrobial therapies is essential, either through project wet-lab work, modules taken in a degree, or knowledge gained through research into the area.

Good organisational and communication skills are essential, as the post holder will be working as part of a dynamic team, with a range of academic and industrial partners. Appropriate further training and personal professional development will be positively encouraged.

Job description

  • Utilise a range of methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the project aimed to ensure project targets are met
  • Take responsibility for the control and stockpile of reagents for their own area of the project
  • Assist the project team to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods
  • Supply data to agreed time-scales to enable the preparation of project reports, presentations and publications
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and lead on preparation of presentations and publications.
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager and the Head of CDEP, commensurate with grade.
  • Undertake all assigned work in accordance with the UKHSA’s Risk Management Systems, policies, and procedures.

Person specification

Essential criteria

  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification/experience in microbiological research
  • Practical experience in the evaluation of antimicrobial therapies
  • Experience of working safely in an ACDP containment level 2 laboratory environment
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills
  • Experience of working flexibly and independently within a team
  • Demonstrable interest in the discovery or development of novel antimicrobial therapies

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience of working with bacteriophage
  • Recent Biomedical Scientist Registration or evidence of portfolio working towards registration
  • Experience engaging with external stakeholders
  • Experience or understanding of working within a regulated environment (e.g., ISO9001, GCP)
  • Experience of working in a clinical laborato
  • Strong computational skills including programming languages

Location

This role is being offered as office/lab based at our Scientific Campus in Porton.

Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary.
