Job summary
The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Job description
Signed in Sep 21, the AUKUS agreement will deliver the next generation of conventionally armed, nuclear powered submarines to the UK and Australia, equipped for intelligence, surveillance, undersea warfare and strike missions alongside support to the UKs Continuous At Sea Deterrent (CASD). SSN AUKUS represents one of the most complex and important defence programmes for both the UK and Australia.
This role represents a rare opportunity to join the SSN AUKUS Project as head of Naval Architecture. A key decision maker with responsibility for all hydrostatic and hydrodynamic elements of the submarine design, delegated safety responsibilities for a number of key systems and interfaces alongside development of operational requirements and doctrine.
You and your team will play a pivotal role in developing the design of the SSN AUKUS Submarine, with responsibility for key elements of platform safety and capability for the first submarine to be jointly operated by by both the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy.
Leading a team of experienced Naval Architects, you will have responsibilities for the provision of technical direction, professional development and mentoring.

Person specification
To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential skills/criteria:
- Ability to lead a cross industry technical team delivering a key national programme
- Chartered Engineer or comparable experience
- Member of a relevant Professional Engineering Institute or equivalent body.
- Relevant Level 6 (e.g. BEng) or higher Naval Architecture qualification or equivalent experience
- Strong analytical skills and a proven track record of effectively communicating complex engineering issues to senior stakeholders
- Significant, proven experience in Ship or submarine Naval Architecture roles
- Experience managing technical Naval Architecture aspects of Submarine design and build programmes
- Experience managing technical Naval Architecture aspects of In Service Submarine programmes
You should also be able to demonstrate the understanding of Submarine Hydrostatics and Submarine Hydrodynamics.
Qualifications
Naval Architect qualified (masters level or equivalent experience), minimum 2:1 (Batchelors), Pass (Masters)BEng/BSc in applicable Science or Engineering Subject
MSc Naval Architecture or similar subject
