Job summary

This role within the UK Naval Authority is hosted by the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), which is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. The Naval Authority & technology group certifies all RN surface warships and submarines, as well as small-boats, autonomous and novel craft. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, from ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), to delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: of every hour of every day. The UK surface fleet protects our nation, internation trade on the high seas, UK dependencies, and interests wherever and whenever our government requires.

The primary delivery location for this position is Bristol Abbey Wood.

Job description

Are you an Engineer inspired to work on sophisticated, cutting-edge maritime surface platforms? If so, we have an incredible opportunity for you to join our Naval Authority Technology Group (NATG). Here, you’ll work at the forefront of engineering, science, and technology to solve unique technical challenges and contribute significantly to key defence platforms by collaborating with experts across defence.

In this role, you’ll act as the Naval Authority Reviewing Officer for the Propulsion & Manoeuvring Systems Naval Authority area. You’ll assist in carrying out audits of the Platform Authority for certification. You will be empowered to make recommendations as the Naval Authority Certifying Officer for approval and issue of Key hazard area PMS certificates. You will provide the Platform Authority with advice on strategies, assumptions and certification submissions, including the introduction of new vessels entering service such as the new Type 26 Frigate.

We are looking for someone who will positively engage with the Platform Authority and Maritime Capability, Trials and Assessment team to monitor and actively promote the clearance of mandatory requirements, conditions of certification and memorandum items recorded on the PMS certificates. You will need to lead your direct report and task industry engineers, accepting and approving their output.

The role also offers an exciting opportunity to assist in the development and maintenance of Naval Authority Area policy and procedures, including the application of the DSA03-DMR Naval Authority Rules for the Certification of MoD Shipping, Naval Ship Code and Class Society Rules, which may include participation at MoD, National or International-wide committees.

  • Additional responsibilities:
    Audit the Platform Authority Request for certification, making recommendations to the Naval Authority Certifying Officer for approval of PMS certificates.
  • Prepare briefing material for the monthly Naval Authority working group.
  • Undertake ship and trials familiarisation visits to enable informed audits.
  • To engage with Project Teams to promote the use of approved standards and practices.
  • There is also an opportunity to assist the Navigation Section for Boat certification.

Person specification

For this role, we are seeking the following:

  • Ability to interpret and challenge complex Engineering Data.
  • The ability to lead a team and engineering projects.
  • Strong stakeholders management skills, with the ability to manage external stakeholders effectively.
  • Maritime experience would be desirable but not essential.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to understand the bigger picture.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
  • Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or equivalent relevant professional registration (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
