Job summary
The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in Defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Requests to work flexibly and/or part time will be considered, taking into account business needs. Please note the salary will be pro-rata where part time hours are undertaken.
The primary delivery location for this position is Bristol Abbey Wood.
The working pattern is flexible, it requires use of classified systems at Bristol Abbey Wood for the stability aspects of the role. A minimum of 60% would be required in the office, (3 days in office if full time) for which could increase depending upon the work and its security classification.
Job description
Responsible for the stability safety assurance of MoD Ships in the Naval Authority you will primarily be providing independent stability assurance of ships ranging from the aircraft carrier to small patrol ships. This activity stretches across all the in-service ships as well those in the design and construction phase. This exposure to an array of ship designs is unique allowing you to develop your knowledge and assist in providing guidance to the teams on naval stability and the software tools. The other side of the role is to run the hull-fouling monitoring system for the Royal Navy with the opportunity to develop the process. Excitingly working closely with our hydrodynamic specialist, you will represent the UK at NATO groups to maintain & develop common hydrodynamic standards.

For this role, we will be seeking the following:

Essential skills and requirements:
- Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful naval architecture outcomes.
- Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in naval architecture.
- Relevant Level 6 (e.g. BEng) or higher Naval Architecture qualification or equivalent experience.
- Member of a relevant Professional Engineering Institute or equivalent body.
Memberships
Member of a relevant Professional Engineering Institute or equivalent body.Evidence of Membership will be required at interview. All memberships declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.
