Job description

You’ll be managed from the Woolwich office, travelling to sites across your region to maintain and install security systems. Most of your work will be field-based across your region, with occasional travel across the UK. Technicians are managed from Woolwich, tasked from home and paid from when they cross the M25 (or if they live within its boundaries from when they leave their home).

Job Purpose:

The role is responsible for delivering high-quality technical support and customer service, ensuring maintenance, installation, and minor works are completed efficiently and in compliance with health and safety standards. The position requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage customer relationships effectively.

Full system training is provided, so if you have a background in electrical, electronic or security engineering, we’ll help you build the specialist knowledge you need.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • As required, act as the primary point of contact for customers, ensuring excellent communication and service delivery.
  • As required, whilst on-site, respond promptly to maintenance and installation enquiries during core working hours.
  • Participate in an on-call rota to provide 24-hour emergency service coverage.
  • When instructed, conduct regular checks and audits on customer systems to ensure compliance and performance.
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for materials and labour for minor works, additions, and alterations.
  • Deliver technical assistance at all levels and develop solutions to technical and design challenges.
  • Supervise trades and subcontractors to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to project specifications.
  • Complete all job-related administration accurately and report in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all work-related and site-specific health and safety guidelines
  • You may also be requested to support and mentor security technician apprentices

What’s in it for you:

This role offers variety, independence and purpose.

You’ll be part of a technically capable team, working with modern security systems across unique and sensitive sites.

Purposeful work: Play a direct role in protecting Defence and Government operations.

Autonomy: Tasked from home, you’ll co-ordinate your own schedule with direction from a regional team.

Development: Ongoing training and technical qualifications within the MOD’s security authority.

Equipment: A fully equipped, non-liveried company vehicle (with optional personal use), tools and uniform.

Occasional travel: Opportunities to support projects elsewhere in the UK and overseas (Gibraltar, Cyprus and Germany)

Employment Hours:

You will be contracted to work 37 hours a week, typically between 08:00-16:00, however through travel time, overtime and on-call duties you will have the opportunity to increase your potential earnings. It is not uncommon for SSG technicians to average 10+ hours a week in travel and overtime.

Your time will be typically spent working within your allocated region, however as SSG are involved in numerous overseas projects there are opportunities to work for short periods of time in Europe. This role will also require operating away from home providing support within the region and to the other SSG UK regional teams, staying in overnight accommodation as required.

Allowances:

Where applicable, allowances are provided, including:

  • Travel Time (for travel outside of core hours).
  • On-Call Allowance.

Should you apply for this role and be found to require sponsorship, your application will be rejected and any provisional offer of employment withdrawn.

These declarations will be discussed with successful candidates following the interview process and before a formal offer of employment is made, as some outside interests may not be compatible with MOD civilian roles. This will not, in the majority of cases, prevent employment in MOD, but it is a measure that must be taken to ensure that appropriate mitigations can be put in place to manage any potential, perceived or actual conflicts of interest from the first day of employment.
