This role is a Senior Animal Technologist role as part of a specialist Animal Sciences team within the Pathology & Animal Sciences Department at APHA. The post has a strong focus on developing animal sciences as well as have responsibility for husbandry, welfare and regulated procedures on farmed livestock, poultry as well as small laboratory animals, for specialist bio-containment facilities and staff management.

Job description

You will work as part of a team with veterinary, scientific and technical staff to deliver a wide range of animal science projects involving a range of important and zoonotic diseases in farmed livestock, poultry or small animals. You will lead in the planning, execution and conduct of studies being carried out under various project licences assuring compliance, staffing and timely execution as well as support other project work carried out in their area. You may also support future site development as part of APHA’s development of Science Capability for Animal Health.

The role will also include contribution to research, primarily to develop methods which minimise animal suffering and improve welfare, refine all aspects of animal use and performance of scientific procedures.

You will provide management, direction and hands on support to APHA’s animal technicians and support staff within the allocated areas. This will include:

  • line management of staff assigned to work in your areas
  • functional management of visitors, others working in the facility and supervision of scientific staff and contract staff as appropriate

You will be responsible for effective use of resources (staff, time, consumables etc) in your area and for effective management oversight of this. You will have the opportunity to be an active member of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB), participating in committee meetings (shared between internal potholders) as well have input into project licence applications and study reviews.

Training is offered to become a Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) and a Home Office Personal Licence holder. You will be expected to support the senior NACWO in producing the NACWO report for the committee. You will provide leadership and implementation of APHA’s Animal Welfare Standards, interacting with scientists and Named people and be proactive in raising any animal welfare concerns.

You will use electronic communication tools, including online diaries, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access.

You will actively participate in safety inspections and audits and will work closely with the Departmental Safety Officer on safety matters. You will participate in inspections and ensure deadlines for closing actions are met.

You will be required to maintain appropriate competence, write and review Standard Operating Processes/Risk assessments and ensure quality compliance in your areas in liaison with the Local Quality Manager. You will participate in internal audits and external inspections and ensure deadlines for closing actions are me.

Person specification

You will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience of working with range of animals in research or commercial facilities.
  • Interest in animal welfare research, applicable to high containment
  • Good understanding of data management and basic understanding of statistical analysis
  • Excellent communication skills liaising with a diverse range of people, using all modern communication tools, in writing and verbally
  • Animal Science degree or currently working towards one or equivalent.

You must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to enable effective communication about veterinary topics with customers and colleagues and meet one of the following:

  • have undertaken undergraduate veterinary training in English;

or

  • having a sufficient command of spoken and written English to effectively perform the role being undertaken by a public sector worker in a customer-facing role

or

  • have achieved the following scores in the academic international English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7.

The animal-related work involved in this post can be physically demanding, therefore a level of physical fitness is required.

The post will also require Health clearance. You will be expected to have any necessary vaccinations or health surveillance, including audiology, influenza A, rabies, TB, tetanus, respiratory and skin sensitisers, and a driver’s medical. This will be arranged by the Health Team, Weybridge.

Security clearance
The Weybridge site is a strategically important national asset due to its role as a reference laboratory supporting the Government’s response to national emergencies including disease outbreaks. For this reason, all postholders based on the APHA Weybridge site must hold a valid Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance or above. It is up to each person applying for a post at APHA Weybridge to ensure they meet the residency criteria. Applicantsmust be currently resident in the UKhave at least three years continuous UK residency as this is a requirement to work at the Weybridge site where the team and work is situated.

Interview
If successful at application stage, you will be invited to interview where you will be assessed on

  • Experience as detailed in the Person Specification section - Success Profiles: Experience - GOV.UK framework.
  • Technical skills (Knowledge of working in biocontainment), as outlined in the advert following theSuccess Profiles: Technical - GOV.UKframework. These will be evaluated during the interview through a structured set of questions.
  • Behaviours (Working Together, Communicating & Influencing, Seeing the Big Picture, and Making Effective Decisions).
