Job summary
Business Data Operations Division (BDOD) is a large and diverse area of around 400 staff, collecting economic statistics from several million businesses a year. It is the foundation for most of the ONS’ core economic outputs, such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The primary role for the division is the data collection, editing and validation of survey data.

Job description
The Account Management Unit (AMU) works closely with some of the UK’s largest businesses to improve the quality, consistency and understanding of the data they provide to ONS. Following the successful model of the Large Cases Unit (LCU), AMU offers a single point of contact for businesses, building strong relationships and ensuring survey data is accurate, timely and coherent across multiple outputs.
In this varied and stakeholder‑focused role, you will develop effective relationships with senior accountants in major businesses, providing regular one‑to‑one support to help them deliver high‑quality data. Working with the Grade 7 lead, you will shape the strategic direction of the team and support the expansion and development of AMU at an exciting stage of its growth.
You will also collaborate closely with internal statistical and operational teams, ensuring any new or changing data requirements are well‑explained, justified and taken forward appropriately.
We are looking for someone who is confident leading through ambiguity, naturally inquisitive, proactive and keen to drive improvement. Please note the role will also involve occasional UK travel to engage directly with businesses.Key Responsibilities:
- To support the AMU account management programs by establishing and maintaining long lasting relationships with senior group accountants/financial controllers at large businesses.
- Leading a team of account managers from AMU teams by providing all necessary support in order for them to deliver effectively. This Includes setting priorities, ensuring access to all relevant training opportunities and tools to perform their roles effectively.
- Supporting the Grade 7 lead to plan the expansion of the AMU including developing resources, training materials and technical capabilities of the unit; Escalating risks and blockers where relevant.
- To collaborate with wider teams to ensure that the data returned for large businesses is captured and treated correctly and consistently.
- To work alongside the LCU to effectively embed the new model of complex account management in a cohesive way.
Person specification
Essential Criteria:
- A strong track record of effective decision‑making, proactive problem‑solving, and successfully leading teams and stakeholders to deliver required outcomes.
- Strong interpersonal skills to fully engage and build strong working relationships with senior stakeholders at the largest businesses.
- Good analytical skills - evidence of analysing data, identifying and resolving issues, drawing out main findings and presenting them effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Confident in summarising complex technical information and analysis tailored to the appropriate audience both verbally and via written reports using appropriate engaging methods.
- Experience or strong knowledge of how surveys are used to produce economic or business information, or equivalent experience analysing complex business or economic data.

Stage 1 – Application
The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, skills, experience, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.
A personal statement is required at application stage, the maximum wordcount allowed is 1250, which should not be exceeded. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion listed in the person specification. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Please note that Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage of the application process.
When a high volume of applications are received, the sift pass mark may be adjusted. Candidates will be invited to interview based on their merit order, with those achieving the highest scores being prioritised. Applicants who score below the adjusted pass mark but still pass will be placed on hold and may be invited to interview at a later date.
Stage 2 – Interview
