Senior Clerk to the Board I Governance Professional
Fixed term: 12 months.
Unfixed hours, but to service Board meeting schedule. 195 Notional hours per annum.
Start date: December 2026 / January 2027
Interview date: w/c Monday 2nd November 2026.
The Bilingual Primary School in Brighton & Hove is a three form, diverse and inclusive Primary School. We believe in promoting The Love of Learning Through Language and our vision is to be at the leading edge of bilingual education in the UK. We aim to immerse children in a second language to stimulate and promote dual language communication, and in doing so enrich and expand their academic, cultural and social worlds.
We are seeking a Clerk to provide administrative support to our Governing Board and Co-Chairs of Governors. As a clerk your role will be crucial to help the Governors carry out their responsibilities and to play their part in supporting the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team in the drive to ensure that all pupils, from any language and socioeconomic background, receive the best possible education and experience at the first and only state-funded bilingual (English/Spanish) school in England.
The main responsibilities of the role include providing advice, support and guidance to the Governing Board and effective organisation and administration of Board and Members meetings.
It is essential that you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including an enthusiastic and appreciative stance towards bilingualism and multicultural settings, literacy and ICT skills that will enable you to convene, host and facilitate meetings and produce accurate minutes within set timescales. The role will involve a mix of working from home as well as school-based so you will need to be self-motivated, well organised and have meticulous attention to detail.
You will need to have a flexible approach to working hours as you will be required to be available at times of Full Governing Board (FGB) meetings (currently 6 per year, 2 hours from 5.30/6.00pm mostly on Thursdays) and Members meetings (2 pa 5-6 pm) and for any additional ad hoc meetings and panels. Currently the ratio of virtual to in-person meetings is 2:4.
You will be the type of person that enjoys inclusive, non-hierarchical ways of working and is comfortable suggesting and implementing innovative solutions that will support collaborative work between time-poor but deeply committed volunteers (Governors/Trustees).
Our current clerk is leaving at the end of November 2025, so this position is available from mid-December/January 2026.
You will be able to support and build a working relationship with the Co-Chairs of Governors. Training and development opportunities are available. Company Secretary skills will be an advantage, especially as the school considers opportunities to partner others in a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). Being fluent in another language (particularly, but not necessarily Spanish), though not essential, would be an advantage. You need to have the right to work in the UK to apply.
Candidates from BAME backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
We reserve the right to interview before the closing date should the right candidate apply so please apply early.
The governors of our school are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will need to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure via the DBS.
