Job description
You’ll apply data science to drive critical public service transformation and influence choices on issues that affect millions of UK citizens. If you have used a variety of programming languages or data science techniques to harness the power of data and think that data science can transform how government services work, we’d love to hear from you.
You’ll join a close-knit team at the heart of one DWP’s highest priority transformation projects – the Health Transformation Programme.
Working with huge datasets (quite possibly the largest on offer in the UK), you’ll be delivering benefits that positively impact thousands of UK citizens.
Our Data Scientists work closely with multidisciplinary development teams that design and deliver new features for the Personal Independence Payment and Health Assessment services.
We use our expertise in datasets and data science techniques to ensure any development is supported by data, helping to improve outcomes for claimants and DWP staff.
You will collaborate with colleagues from a range of different digital professions to promote the use of data.
Your primary stakeholders will include the Design and Build and Strategy teams that support the Health Transformation programme.
Product development requests are commissioned by primary stakeholders and include feature discovery and prioritisation, hypothesis testing, trial and feature evaluation and success measures.
A degree or higher in STEM ( Science, Technology, engineering, or mathematics) is essential for this role, and evidence of qualification will be requested.

Hybrid Working
This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

Salary Information
Pay for this role is from £57,946 to £75,493.
The maximum salary for the grade is £68,205 however a Digital Allowance of up to £7,288 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current salary.

Your application will consist of four parts:

2. Civil Service Numerical Test.
After submission of the first stage of your application you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Numerical Test. If you successfully pass the test, you will be invited to complete the final stage of the application.

3. Employment history - This should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed.
When giving details in your employment history you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:
- Significant experience delivering innovative, data-driven solutions and can apply a range of data science techniques to solve business problems or improve established processes.
- Proven ability to explore, combine and transform data from across disparate sources, writing code in R, Python or SQL that is testable and scalable.
- Significant demonstrable experience of building team capability through role modelling, mentoring and coaching.
- Evidence of strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with colleagues to understand their requirements and deliver complex analytical projects in a timely manner.
- Influential with proven ability to communicate results to a range of audiences, translating technical concepts into non-technical language where necessary.
4. Technical statement (up to 250 words). The following statement is aligned to the required technical skill of Technical Breadth. This statement should be used to provide example(s) of how you meet the criterion below:
- Describe a time you delivered a data-driven solution to solve a business problem or improve an established process.
Ensure that all examples provided in your statements are taken directly from your own experience and that you describe the examples in your own words. The sift panel will use the information in your employment history and technical statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge.
An initial sift will be conducted using the technical statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will be progressed to a full sift.

Stage 2: Interview
If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a face to face interview. There, you will be assessed against the essential criteria listed above.
There will also be a short technical test where you will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of: Experience of writing testable and scalable code in R, Python or SQL.
You will also be asked to do a 10-minute presentation where you will be asked to demonstrate the following:
- Influential with proven ability to communicate results to a range of audiences, translating technical concepts into non-technical language where necessary.
The use of visual aids such as PowerPoint is optional. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview.
