Are you ready to take a leading role in managing technical enquiries and delivering safer, more efficient highways? We’re looking for an experienced Senior Engineer to head up the technical enquiry management service for Traffic Management and Safety within Derbyshire’s Highways Commissioning team.
This is a pivotal role ensuring timely, evidence-based responses to enquiries from residents, Members, and partners. You’ll act as the principal technical expert, commissioning interventions, managing investigations, and supporting strategic decision-making to improve road safety and traffic management across the county.
About the Role
• Lead the end-to-end technical enquiry process, including logging, triage, investigation, and resolution.
• Act as the escalation point for complex traffic and road safety issues.
• Commission minor traffic management and road safety schemes aligned with policy.
• Manage TRO requests and liaise with the central TRO team to ensure legal compliance.
• Provide expert advice on temporary traffic management for events and emergency responses.
• Analyse enquiry trends and stakeholder feedback to inform policy and investment planning.
• Represent the Council in public meetings, consultations, and multi-agency forums.
• Deputise for the Traffic Management and Road Safety Commissioner when required.
• Line manage technical officers and support professional development within the team.
About You
• Significant experience managing highway technical enquiries within a local authority or similar environment.
• Strong knowledge of highway legislation, traffic regulations, and best practice (DMRB, CDM, TRO processes).
• Excellent communication skills with political awareness and the ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships.
• Proven ability to lead and motivate teams, manage multiple priorities, and deliver under pressure.
• Skilled in writing detailed technical reports and providing clear, evidence-based advice.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
• Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Management, or equivalent experience.
• Evidence of continued professional development.
• Experience in project management, financial planning, and multi-agency collaboration.
Desirable
• Membership of a relevant professional body (ICE, CIWEM, IHIE).
• Management training or qualifications (ILM, PRINCE2).
• Experience in FOI processes, complaints resolution, or policy development.

Salary range
- £44,433 - £47,925 per year
