Are you ready to take a key role in delivering improvements to the standard of private sector housing. We are at the forefront of public health, delivering actual improvements to people’s lives on a daily basis and ensuring private sector accommodation is safe to live in. We're seeking a proactive and adaptable individual to join our team and make a real difference within our communities.

Role Overview:

You will be responding to customer concerns over their accommodation and proactively improving their housing conditions by obtaining the necessary repairs and improvements. Given the proposals in the Renters Rights Bill, a more proactive enforcement approach will be essential for this role. HMO licencing of properties will be undertaken, along with the investigations of any condition breaches.

You will also administer a small number of complex DFGs which promote independence within the homes of disabled and vulnerable residents. You must be able to form relationships with other council teams such as Housing Advice, as well as customers, contractors, landlords and other agencies to ensure housing conditions are improved and grants are provided in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively investigate and carry out inspections relating to housing standards including those relating to the licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and responding to complaints about housing conditions in both the private rented and social housing sectors.
  • Apply the appropriate enforcement legislation to ensure compliance is obtained in relation to housing standards.
  • Deliver grant assistance via the West Sussex Disabled Facilities Grants Policy, including Disabled Facility Grants, in a timely manner by supporting the customer through the application process and ensuring the customer at the end of the process has the much-needed adaptation along with receiving a high-quality experience.
  • Liaise with our planning team to provide housing standard advice on applications.
  • Work with other staff and management of the friendly and successful Housing Standards team, to ensure the team continuously delivers the highest quality environmental health services to our customers.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A degree (BSc/MSc) or diploma in Environmental Health.
  • Hold the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) competency certificate.
  • Up to date expert technical knowledge of construction and implement this knowledge through recently carrying out inspections and applying current housing standards.
  • Ability to interpret specialist information e.g. technical plans/drawings and specifications.
  • Good organisational skills and able to manage workload in an efficient, effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally to members, officers and the public.

Benefits:

  • Agile working arrangements to promote work-life balance.
  • Enrolment on the Local Government pension scheme.
  • 34 days of annual leave to support your wellbeing.
