Job summary

A Senior Infrastructure Engineer builds, administers, transitions, supports and maintains infrastructure services throughout the service lifecycle, according to the departmental policy and Home Office strategy.
Where business needs allow some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. Where this is the case, employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in the office.

Job description
You will join DDAT’s cutting-edge Shared Applications Service Level 2 Support (SAS L2) Team, responsible for real-time monitoring of core technology, infrastructure, applications, and services within the Home Office. The team provides a consolidated operational view of the technical estate and ensures 24/7/365 support and recovery.
As part of SAS L2, you will help deliver an industry-leading approach to technical estate management, leveraging the latest technologies, techniques, and service management best practices. Your work will focus on innovative solutions for real-time monitoring, automation, and service industrialisation.
You will collaborate closely with colleagues and stakeholders, including the Service Desk, Incident Managers, Project Managers, Service Transition teams, external suppliers, the Information Technology Operations Centre (ITOC), and the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC). Together, you will ensure services are effectively monitored, incidents are resolved through hands-on Level 2 intervention, and service restoration meets agreed service levels.
Additionally, you will contribute to broader management activities such as workforce planning, budgeting, technology roadmaps, and project delivery.

Main responsibilities
Your main day to day responsibilities will be:
- Designing, implementing, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions.
- Reviewing the systems designs of others to ensure selection of appropriate technology, efficient use of resources and integration of multiple systems and technology.
- Defining the integration build and co-ordinate build activities across systems and understand how to undertake and support integration testing activities.
- Initiating and monitoring actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems, including consulting specialists where required. You will identify the appropriate remedy and assist with implementation of fixes as well preventative measures.
- Identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users.
- Coaching and mentoring more junior infrastructure engineers, participating in their appraisal and related performance management processes.
Essential skills criteria
You’ll have a visible passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or strong experience in:
- Providing direction and coaching to more junior members.
- Managing and delivering complex technologies within time, cost and quality targets.
- Agile development and continuous integration principles.
- Maintaining focus on the whole life cycle of service delivery; from design, development, and delivery through to operation.
- Dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.
- The technical concepts required in your role and an ability to build solutions.

Capability allowance
The advertised role is part of the Home Office Government Digital and Data Profession. This role has access to a digital capability-based allowance. The allowance values are set by the Home Office, subject to remaining in a qualifying role and are non-pensionable. This allowance is non-contractual, subject to an annual review and could be withdrawn at any time.
For both new entrants and existing civil servants, the total compensation offer is a combination of base salary and, if applicable, a capability-based allowance. The pay ranges for this role are National: £46,062 - £49,287 London: £50,182- £53,695. New entrants to the Civil Service will start on the pay range minimum. For existing civil servants, our policies on level transfer and promotion will apply.
