The Role

We’re recruiting for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer – Network DevOps here at, Justice Digital, Data and Science to be part of our warm and collaborative Digital Infrastructure and Security Operations (DISO), team.

This role aligns against Senior Infrastructure Engineer from the Government Digital and Data Framework

DISO is part of Technology Services in Justice Digital, Data and Science, a modern and diverse workplace that promotes a healthy work-life balance and flexible working options.

The DISO service areas are:

WAN – ownership of our Wide Area Network and Gateway services both internally & externally provided.

  • LAN – ownership of our wired & Wi-Fi Local Area Network services both internally & externally provided, and our Physical Infrastructure field services.
  • Voice – ownership of our digital, analogue and IPT Voice & Unified Comms services.
  • Video – ownership of our Video conferencing services, procedural video services including pre-recorded evidence.
  • Hybrid Cloud – ownership of our Azure hosting offer, on-premises hosting, testing and monitoring and integration services
  • Infrastructure Automation Team – ownership of our AWS infrastructure and automation offering.
  • SecOps – responsible for safeguarding the MoJ’s critical IT services. This team continuously monitors for and investigates cyber incidents while maintaining situational awareness of potential threats and system vulnerabilities.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer at MoJ, you will work with colleagues across Technology Services and build strong relationships with Service Owners, Information Security, Customer Service Operational Teams, Delivery Managers, Product Managers and other key stakeholders. You will share knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team and community. You will be comfortable working across multi-disciplinary teams and flexible enough to adjust, at short notice, to immediate demand.

The role will provide a dedicated support function dealing with service requests, tickets and major incidents. Occasionally you will participate in support during Out of Hours (OoH), for which you’ll be paid an allowance and further payment if dealing with incidents.

Key Responsibilities:

Network & Infrastructure Service Ownership

  • Own the technical delivery and operational management of enterprise network and cloud infrastructure services across WAN, LAN and hybrid environments, ensuring secure connectivity, high availability and alignment with departmental technology standards and roadmaps.

Infrastructure Engineering & Automation

  • Drive infrastructure engineering practices across network and cloud platforms, implementing Infrastructure as Code and automated deployment pipelines to ensure consistent, scalable and supportable technology delivery.

Technical Design & Integration

  • Translate architectural designs into robust network and infrastructure solutions, assuring low-level designs and coordinating integration across cloud platforms, core network services and enterprise systems.

Security, Performance & Resilience

  • Embed security controls within network and cloud infrastructure, proactively manage performance, capacity and lifecycle risks, and ensure effective monitoring and operational visibility across services.

Major Incident & Problem Resolution

  • Provide senior technical leadership during major incidents affecting connectivity and infrastructure services, leading technical troubleshooting, root cause analysis and long-term remediation.

Technical Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with architects, security teams, service owners and suppliers to deliver reliable infrastructure services, providing technical guidance to engineers and contributing to technology planning and service evolution within DISO.

Continuous Improvement & Future Capability Development

  • Contribute to long term infrastructure and networking roadmaps, evaluating emerging technologies and driving innovation where it delivers measurable value. Champion modernisation initiatives that improve reliability, reduce technical debt and enhance developer and service user experience.

Person Specification

Essential

Strong AWS Infrastructure & Networking Expertise

  • Demonstrable experience designing, implementing and supporting AWS infrastructure, with deep knowledge of VPC architecture (subnets, routing tables, NAT gateways, Transit Gateway, peering, security groups, NACLs) and secure, scalable network design.

Core Enterprise Network Services Knowledge

  • Proven experience configuring, managing and troubleshooting DNS, DHCP, IP Address Management (IPAM) and Network Access Control Systems (NACS) within large scale, multi-site environments.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Delivery

  • Hands on experience using Terraform to provision and manage infrastructure across multiple environments, applying version control, modular design and automation best practices.

Containerisation & Cloud Native Platforms

  • Practical experience deploying and operating containerised workloads using Docker and AWS container services such as EKS and ECS.

Scripting & Automation Capability

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following languages for automation and operational tooling: Python, PowerShell, Ruby, including use within CI/CD pipelines preferably GitHub Actions.

Monitoring, Observability & Operational Resilience

  • Experience implementing and supporting monitoring and alerting solutions using tools such as Grafana, Prometheus or SolarWinds to ensure service reliability, performance optimisation and proactive incident response.

Technical Leadership & Mentoring

  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers, providing technical guidance, coaching and quality assurance to improve capability and engineering standards within a team.

Modern Engineering Standards

  • Demonstrable ability to apply modern engineering standards and best practice approaches (including DevOps principles, automation-first mindset and secure-by-design), and guide others in adopting these standards effectively.
