As the Senior Interaction Designer, you will be part of the multi-disciplinary Digital Products and Services Team (DPS) responsible for digital delivery through understanding user needs, prototyping and implementing new solutions. DPS in the UK aligns closely with our overseas DPS team members, shaping key initiatives that impact millions of people, ensuring our services meet real user needs.
Our team designs applications (mobile & desktop) and websites, as well as guidance, tools and forms that sit on our own systems and on GOV.UK to support programmes and business areas across the FCDO. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that we are designing the right things for our users. They will be part of a user-centred design practice/community that's breaking the mould of traditional government work. They will also play a vital role in shaping the interactions between users and internal/external applications and websites, FCDO’s GOV.UK content and guidance, ensuring simple and inclusive user experiences.
Roles and responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Using user-centred design approaches.
- Managing the FCDO design system within the Microsoft Power Platform.
- Creating and using prototyping kits such as the government prototyping toolkit to communicate and test ideas with users improving them as required using evidenced based feedback.
- Mapping user journeys, processes and visualise design problems.
- Building positive relationships with stakeholders and team members, influencing and collaborating with them to improve design quality.
- Helping facilitate the design process by participating in research activities, pairing with service and content designers, facilitating workshops and communicating design decisions.
- Working collaboratively with your team to turn concepts into user-centred apps, tools, websites and forms.
- Participating in the design communities within FCDO and across government.
- Using your expertise to review and provide feedback to other interaction designers on their work.
- Seeking out opportunities for learning and improvement by getting feedback from your colleagues and the business.
- Engaging with wider IDD governance and assurances processes.
The FCDO also operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.
Candidates who secure a role that is considered specialist/technical, may be required to affiliate to the relevant specialist network, if not already a member.
This role may require occasional travel to UK offices. This is estimated at approximately once every three months but will be dependent on business needs.
Person specification
You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you will need to bring proof of identity (British Passport/Driving Licence etc.) with you.
This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

At least one year of this must have been a consecutive twelve-month period. Serving overseas with HM Forces, in some other official capacity as a representative of His Majesty’s Government or having lived overseas as a result of your parents’ or partner’s Government employment counts as UK residency for the purposes of security clearances.

- Build consensus around a design approach, for example, by asking difficult questions and challenging assumptions.
2. Designing for everyone, practitioner level – you can:
- Advise teams on how to design inclusive, accessible and environmentally sustainable content or services.
- Design and deliver ethical content or services that consider the personal and social context of users.
- Ensure a design meets appropriate standards, for example accessibility regulations.
3. Leading design, working level – you can:
- Lead and coordinate design work in your team, with support.
- Communicate the value of user-centred design to your team.
- Support other designers.
- Work with digital and data leaders in your organisation, when needed.
- Proven experience in:
- Sketching, concept creation and prototype design using a range of methods, including HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)/Sassy Cascading Style Sheets (SCSS), Figma/Sketch/Adobe XD.
- Journey mapping with good understanding of information design/architecture.
- Working with pattern libraries and/or style guidelines.
- Designing/building websites and applications (desktop/mobile).
- Able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.
