
Senior Power BI and Collaboration Engineer
Job summary
The purpose of this role is to:
- Manage the creation of Power BI data models and data connections
- Manage the technical development of dashboards and data visualisations – currently via MS Power BI
- Work with customers to advise on data related practices, offer guidance and support developmental projects related to Power BI
- Support the team with wider team with innovative developments in data science and analytics
- Support the Head of Collaboration Engineering in delivering key elements of the Data Strategy
Job description
The post holder’s main accountabilities will include the following:
- Power BI Development and Delivery – Lead the design, build and maintenance of Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic models, ensuring high-quality, scalable and reusable solutions aligned to best practice.
- Data Modelling and Performance Optimisation – Develop and optimise data models, DAX measures, and data transformations, ensuring accuracy, performance, reliability, and robust data refresh processes.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Requirements Management – Engage with business stakeholders to understand performance needs, define KPIs, and translate requirements into effective reporting and insight solutions.
- Governance, Security and Quality Assurance – Ensure strong data governance through quality assurance processes, documentation, role-based access controls (RLS), and secure handling of sensitive data.
- Operational Support and Continuous Improvement – Support live reporting environments, troubleshoot issues, monitor performance and user adoption, and drive continuous improvement in reporting products and processes.
- Collaboration, Leadership and Capability Building – Work within agile teams and with cross-functional partners to integrate data sources and improve monitoring; provide guidance on best practice, mentor colleagues, and line manage a small team.
- Strategic Contribution and Risk Management – Support delivery of the organisation’s data strategy, contribute to data initiatives, and identify, manage, and escalate risks, technical debt, and procurement considerations.

Essential Technical criteria
- Power BI Data Modelling Knowledge: Strong knowledge of Power BI, including Data model construction, DAX, Power Query, and semantic modelling principles such as star schema design [Lead criterion]
- Data and Platform Knowledge: Good understanding of SQL, KQL, relational data structures, and modern data platforms such as Azure Synapse and Microsoft Fabric.
- Performance and Optimisation Techniques: Knowledge of methods for improving dashboards, visualisation, and model performance, including DAX optimisation and data refresh strategies.
- Data Governance and Security: Understanding of data quality, metadata, documentation and secure data handling, including role-based access, workspace access controls, and privacy considerations.
- Modern Data Practices: Awareness of agile ways of working and emerging technologies, including developments in AI and CoPilot capabilities.
Essential Experience criteria
- Leadership and Capability Building: Experience leading or mentoring others and developing guidance or training to support adoption of reporting tools and good practice [Lead criterion]
- Insight Development and Power BI Delivery: Experience designing and delivering data models, datasets, and dashboards that support performance monitoring and business decision making.
- Data Integration and Solution Optimisation: Experience integrating data from multiple sources and improving performance of reporting solutions in live environments.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Requirements Elicitation: Experience working with stakeholders to define requirements, shape metrics, and deliver outputs that meet user needs.
Desirable criteria (these will be assessed in the event of tie-breaker scenarios at the sift stage only)
- Experience of using a range of tools and techniques related to data science and data analysis - to support the creation of innovative products and reports (e.g., Python, R, R Shiny)
- Experience of project working within a DDaT environment
- Excellent stakeholder relationship management
- Relevant Certifications in MS Power BI and evidence of relevant IT/Data Science related training

Interview Details
If you have successfully passed sift at the application stage, you will be invited to an interview which will either take place via Microsoft Teams or Face-to-Face, and which will take place from the week commencing 03 August 2026.
It will be an Experience and Strengths based interview.
The following Essential Experience criteria will be assessed at Interview:

A reserve list will be created for this position; this means that if you have passed the interview, but we cannot immediately offer you this position, you will be placed on a reserve list for 12 months and may be considered for similar positions during that time.
