Medway Public Health is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic Senior Public Health Manager for the Wider Determinants of Health. You will lead the wider determinants team, who are well established and passionate about the work they deliver. They have extensive experience working collaboratively across sectors and organisations to create a common goal and achieve improved health outcomes.

The postholder will be focused on addressing the wider determinants by working strategically and systematically across the council, sectors and wider systems to embed prevention agendas and tackle inequalities. It requires the ability to influence and engage across a broad range of stakeholders including developing strong working relationships with Medway’s thriving Voluntary, Community, Social and Faith Enterprises (VCSFE) to enable co creation and co development of services and interventions that meet the needs of the local population.

The are several areas of priority for this post some of which include, but not limited to, a focus on healthy and sustainable places; addressing Social Isolation and Loneliness and how it impacts Medway residents; and supporting Social Prescribing across the system for both primary care and the third sector. In addition, they will work alongside national bodies to influence and engage in best practice for the benefit of residents both within Medway and beyond.

A significant proportion of this role will work with a focus on healthy and sustainable places, with a good understanding of the strategic health needs for planning and development and consideration of impact of growth in Medway. It requires working closely with colleagues in the Planning teams, other council departments and external partners to input into the development and implementation of major policies. In addition, a significant proportion of this role will include reviewing Health Impact Assessments to ensure health impacts and active environments are considered.

They will lead a team of highly skilled Public Health professionals to support wider determinants work scoping areas of priorities, alongside taking responsibility for the development, implementation, and delivery of national, regional and local public health policies and deliver against key public health targets.

  • Knows how to leverage national, regional, and local public health policies and strategies to influence inter-agency and interdisciplinary strategic plans and programmes leading to improvement of population health and wellbeing
  • A developed understanding of how to promote population and community HWB addressing the wider determinants of health and health inequalities
  • Ability to build and maintain supportive and empathic relationships, securing stakeholder support and commitment to a course of action or different way of thinking by listening, presenting ideas convincingly and persuasively.
  • Extensive experience of leading large scale programmes, ideally across both health and social care, with a proven and successful track record in delivering improved outcomes, savings and effective management of risk

Career Progression Frameworks (CPF) have been introduced for all roles at Medway Council. These frameworks provide a mechanism for employees to take ownership of their development within their post and be rewarded accordingly. This means that the salary you will be offered will be at level A unless, based on an assessment against the CPF criteria, you demonstrate that you are meeting the criteria of level B or C. There will be further opportunity once in post to progress from level A to B, and B to C.

Level B details the developed competencies that an individual who is practised in this role would be able to demonstrate and will be a progression of knowledge, experience and skills from level A.

Level C requires the highest level of competence and applicants would need to fully meet and demonstrate all aspects of the job profile, including qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience.

The Public Health Team are seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Public Health Manager – Wider Determinants at level C. You will meet the requirements of the person specification fully and can demonstrate applied knowledge, experience and skills in this role. All elements within the person specification are essential. You will be supported through induction, probation and a supportive Performance Appraisal and Career Conversation, which can include identifying and supporting the achievement of professional goals.
