Job description

As Senior Service Continuity Manager you will be accountable for the overall quality and execution of Service Continuity Management processes responsible for minimising downtime, cost and business impact. You will play a critical role in ensuring that the organisation can continue operating during and after disruptive events.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing Service Continuity Management processes, procedures, and key artefacts such as service continuity plans, ensuring they are up-to-date, effective, and aligned with organizational risk appetite.
  • Engaging proactively with cross-functional teams across IT, business units, and external partners to ensure continuity planning is integrated with the wider organizational strategy and operational needs.
  • Supporting Product Teams in testing continuity plans, processes, and procedures to identify weak points, ensure team readiness, and establish effective workarounds.
  • Facilitating first-line fault diagnosis and resolution, coordinating with internal and external teams to minimize service disruption and ensure rapid recovery.
  • Collaborating with Business Continuity teams outside of IT, ensuring IT continuity is embedded within broader business continuity and resilience frameworks.
  • Ensuring stakeholder awareness and readiness, providing training and visibility into service continuity plans, roles, and responsibilities in the event of a disaster.
  • Leading forums and exercises, such as disaster recovery meetings and simulations, to identify gaps, share insights, and drive improvements in continuity planning.
  • Acting as a key escalation point during IT incidents, guiding teams through appropriate processes and keeping IT Service Management leadership informed with timely updates.
  • Measuring and reporting on continuity performance, using KPIs and metrics to track progress, identify trends, and inform decision-making.
  • Delivering clear, accurate, and regular reporting to stakeholders, including insights and recommendations for enhancing resilience and preparedness.
  • Driving continuous improvement, leveraging lessons learned, stakeholder feedback, and industry best practices to evolve continuity plans, systems, and processes.
  • Championing a culture of resilience, working collaboratively to enhance the user experience, streamline processes, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of IT services in support of the Government’s diplomatic, development, and consular missions worldwide.

The FCDO operates an agile workforce. To facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time as we may reasonably require.

Candidates who secure a role that is considered specialist/technical, may be required to affiliate to the relevant specialist network, if not already a member.

This role may require occasional travel to UK offices and to overseas networks. This is estimated at one overseas trip per year and one UK trip per month but will be dependent on business needs.

Person specification

You must be a British Citizen at the time of application and, if invited to interview, you will need to bring proof of identity (British Passport/Driving Licence etc.) with you.

This role requires you to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance.

For more information about this process, click here. Attaining DV will require you to have been resident in the UK for five of the last ten years. At least one year of this must have been a consecutive twelve-month period. Serving overseas with HM Forces, in some other official capacity as a representative of His Majesty’s Government or having lived overseas as a result of your parents’ or partner’s Government employment counts as UK residency for the purposes of security clearances.

It is essential in your application that you provide evidence and proven examples in each of the following Minimum Criteria, the Behaviours and the Technical question as far as you are able to do so. Minimum Criteria

  • Expert knowledge of Business Continuity Institute Standards ISO22301 with working knowledge of other related ISO’s.
  • Proven track record of leading Service Continuity functions, ensuring the availability and performance of live services.
  • Working level understanding of Continuity Management as outlined within the Operational Control Manager role.
  • Working knowledge of IT Service Management ISO20000.

Interview Stage

If you are successful at the application stage, you will be invited to attend a panel interview at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. This will be held remotely on Microsoft Teams and details will be given to candidates who are successful at the sift stage.
