Our Senior Software Engineers lead and set the strategy as well as build our products and applications with researchers, testers, architects, analysts and designers as part of multifunctional agile delivery teams.

Hybrid Working

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £57,946 to £80,664.

The maximum salary for the grade is £68,205, however a Digital Allowance of up to £12,459 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current substantive salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion will move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or receive a 10% increase applied to their current substantive salary, whichever is greater.

Any temporary allowances that you are currently in receipt of will not form part of the calculation to determine your pay. Any allowances that are in payment will cease when you move into your new role.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of four parts:

1. A Personal Details application form.

2. Employment history - this should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed.

3. Personal statement - up to 1000 words. This statement should be used to provide examples of how you meet the essential criteria below:

  • Significant experience of building in cloud-based environments like AWS and Azure.
  • An Excellent understanding of TDD and BDD.
  • Detailed working knowledge of SQL and noSQL database applications such as Postgres, MySQL, and MongoDB.
  • Extensive experience and proven track record in the build up a useful, robust automated test suite to support a continuous deployment environment.
  • Strong working knowledge and practical experience of APIs, RESTful services and Microservice Architectures.

4. Technical statement (up to 250 words). The following statement is aligned to the required technical skill of Programming and Build. This statement should be used to provide one or more examples of how you meet the criterion below:

  • A proven track record of building and deploying modern Java applications.

Ensure that all examples provided in your statements are taken directly from your own experience and that you describe the examples in your own words. The sift panel will use the information in your employment history, personal statement, and technical statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge.

An initial sift will be conducted using the technical statement. Candidates who pass the initial sift will be progressed to a full sift.

Stage 2: Coding Test

If you are successful at the sift stage, we will send you a coding test to complete remotely.

The test will focus on the technical elements listed in the essential criteria in this advert. You must not use any AI or generative tools when completing the test.

You will have 7 days to complete the test from the date we send it.

If you pass the coding test, we will invite you to the face-to-face assessment centre.

Stage 3: Face-to-Face Assessment Centre

If you are successful in the coding test, you will be invited to attend a face-to-face assessment centre at our Leeds Digital Hub (Quarry House). Assessment centres will take place between 02/11/26 to 6/11/26. You will be required to attend on only one of these dates. These dates are fixed and cannot be altered. No alternative dates will be provided. The assessment centre will last approximately 3 to 4 hours and will feature three main components:

  • Coding Pairing Exercise - this will assess your performance against the essential criteria listed for the role.
  • Group Exercise - this activity is designed to evaluate the two Behaviours outlined in the advert above.
  • Interview - the interview will test you against the essential criteria.

We will send you further details if you pass the sift and coding test.

Recruitment Timeline

The recruitment process will adhere strictly to the following schedule. Please ensure you are available for all stages before applying. These dates are fixed and cannot be altered. No alternative dates will be provided.

  • The advert will close on Sunday 20/09/26 at 11:55pm.
  • We will send the coding test on 05/10/26.
  • The coding test submission deadline is 11/10/26 at 11:55pm.
  • The Leeds Assessment Centre will be 02/11/26 to 6/11/26.
  • We will contact you to tell you whether you have been successful or not from mid November 2026 .

Near Miss Criteria

Following the assessment centre stage, if you do not reach the required standard for the advertised Grade 7 role, we may be able to offer you a role which would be a grade below the advertised post under our “Near Miss” process. If you fall into this category, we will contact you once the interview results have been released.
