If so, The Garage has an exciting opportunity for you to work on automation solutions that directly improve services used by millions of citizens.

The Garage, DWP's strategic automation team, has built over 75 solutions that have processed over 50 million transactions in the last 8 years. Recognised as a government leader in intelligent automation, The Garage is also acknowledged as leading the way across industry.

This role is ideal for a software engineer who enjoys designing and delivering high quality solutions while working closely with both technical colleagues and business stakeholders. Based in The Garage, the focus is on building complete features within a single scrum team and contributing to a strong collaborative engineering culture.

The work centres on modern automation, using cloud native APIs and emerging agentic AI technologies, with RPA applied where legacy systems require it. Much of the development involves creating new solutions from the ground up, including agent facing web applications, automated case processing and AI driven communication triage.

The Garage is largely co located, supporting effective hybrid working and regular collaboration in person. Engineers are encouraged to take ownership of their work, contribute to technical design discussions and support others through mentoring and knowledge sharing.

You will have access to modern tools and platforms such as AWS, GitLab, Jira, Confluence, Teams and Slack, supported by MacBook Pro equipment. Strong learning and development is built in, with access to conferences, training, digital learning platforms and direct support from partners including AWS, UiPath and MongoDB. Job description

  • Design and build complete features and components independently using modern frameworks and AWS services. - Write, review and refactor production code working alongside your team to ensure high quality, maintainable solutions.
  • Implement automated testing including unit tests, integration tests, and API tests.
  • Integrate with AWS services, APIs, and databases to build end-to-end functionality.
  • Debug and resolve technical issues in development and test environments, investigating root causes.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to quality discussions with the team.
  • Write technical documentation for components, features, and APIs.
  • Mentor Junior Software Engineers through pairing and providing guidance on development practices.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Test Engineers, and Business Analysts to understand requirements and deliver solutions. - Contribute to technical improvements and development practices within the team.

Though not essential, it would be beneficial to have experience of the following when starting the role:

  • Experience with robotic process automation (UiPath) and AI/ML solutions.

Person specification

When giving details in your employment history and personal statement you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • Experience of building cloud-based solutions using JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js with modern frameworks (React, Next.js, Express).
  • Experience with AWS services (Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, API Gateway) and databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience of integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience of working in agile teams delivering software.

Hybrid Working

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

If a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for the role and for you, you will normally be required to spend a minimum of 60% of your contracted working hours from your DWP office.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £44,447 to £59,813.

The maximum salary for the grade is £46,547, however a Digital Allowance of up to £13,266 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current substantive salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion will move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or receive a 10% increase applied to their current substantive salary, whichever is greater.

Any temporary allowances that you are currently in receipt of will not form part of the calculation to determine your pay. Any allowances that are in payment will cease when you move into your new role.

Selection process details

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of three parts:

1. A Personal Details application form.

2. Employment history - this should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed based on the essential criteria.

3. Personal statement - up to 1000 words. This statement should be used to provide examples of how you meet the essential criteria listed in the Person specification.
