We are looking for Software Engineers to join us! We are looking for forward-thinking people with a passion for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery working on the latest cloud and software applications. You will have an eye for detail and stakeholder management skills to provide technical and procedural expertise working within our Digital Services (DS) Directorate.
This campaign is for external candidates who wish to be based at either our Newport or Tichfield site. Therefore this campaign has been linked with the internal advert 464004 Software Engineer. Job description
A Software Engineer designs, develops, runs, tests and improve software that meets the user’s needs. You are responsible for writing clean and secure code following a test-driven approach. You will create a code that is open by default and easy for others to use. You will deliver simple or small software components that form part of a product.

The role will include:
- Develop and enhance software solutions to meet user story needs.
- Follow best practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines.
- Write clean, secure, and well-tested code.
- Coach and mentor colleagues.
- Support a continuous delivery environment, using effective delivery and deployment techniques.
- Operate the services they build and identify issues in production.
- Design and execute a range of test techniques.

Essential Skills Criteria
- Programming and build (software engineering) (Practitioner) – Collaborates with others when necessary to review specifications. Uses these agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium to high complexity, using the right standards and tools. Contributes to code reviews and gives constructive feedback to others.
- Test Engineering (Working) – Able to design, execute and maintain test cases (including automated tests) using standard testing techniques and frameworks (with support from senior members of the team). Able to produce different business scenarios for a feature, working with others in the team. Able to use a range of technologies and frameworks for testing. Follows test engineering practices and standards (including source control and CI/CD pipelines) and integrates tests early to enable continuous feedback. Investigates problems and opportunities in existing processes and contributes to recommending solutions to these. Should be able to write automated tests with supervision from senior team members.
- Service Support (Working) - Able to help with the investigation and fixing of service faults. Completing defined activities under direction. Carries out maintenance tasks on service support infrastructure.
- Communicating between technical and non-technical (Working) - Able to effectively translate and accurately communicate across technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring clarity and understanding. Able to support and host discussions within a multidisciplinary team, with potentially difficult dynamics. Able to advocate for the team externally and manage differing stakeholder perspectives.

Stage 1 – Application
The assessment process at the application stage will be based on your work history, skills, experience, CV, and personal statement. It is important that your application is tailored to highlight the skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the role.
A personal statement is required at application stage, the maximum wordcount allowed is 1250 words, which should not be exceeded. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion listed in the person specification. As these criteria are scored, it is advisable to give clear examples for each one, including the impact of your actions, ideally utilising the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Please note that Success Profiles Behaviour examples are not required at this stage of the application process.
When a high volume of applications are received, the sift pass mark may be adjusted. Candidates will be invited to interview based on their merit order, with those achieving the highest scores being prioritised. Applicants who score below the adjusted pass mark but still pass will be placed on hold and may be invited to interview at a later date.
Stage 2 – Interview
If invited to interview, you will be assessed using techniques aligned with the Civil Service Success Profiles framework, covering all behaviours listed in the job advert and any required technical skills.
Interviews may be in person or via Microsoft Teams.
