Street Cleansing Chargehand

Are you passionate about keeping our borough clean, safe, and welcoming? We’re looking for a proactive and dedicated Street Cleansing Chargehand to help lead our frontline teams and deliver a service the community can be proud of.

About the Role:

As a Street Cleansing Chargehand, you will play a key role in supporting the Street Cleansing Supervisors to deliver high quality operational services across Merton. You’ll oversee daily deployment, monitor work quality, provide frontline support, and ensure our teams deliver excellent standards in line with service requirements and the code of practice on litter and refuse.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Supervisors with daily operational management across the Street Cleansing Service.

  • Deploying staff and resources in line with the Allocations Plan.

  • Providing frontline and driving support as required.

  • Ensuring scheduled and reactive work is completed and accurately recorded via in¿cab devices.

  • Supporting staff inductions and promoting excellent customer service.

  • Participating in weekend working rotas and covering Supervisor shifts when required.

  • Ensuring staff follow all health and safety requirements, including correct PPE and equipment use.

  • Completing daily vehicle and equipment safety checks and reporting defects.

  • Liaising with residents, Members, BIDs, enforcement officers, and external organisations to support service delivery.

  • Supporting cleansing operations for events and assisting in civil emergency response when required.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • A good understanding of the code of practice on litter and refuse, waste legislation, and health and safety requirements.

  • Strong people¿management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide frontline operational teams.

  • Confidence using software systems for data capture and reporting.

  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise a busy workload.

  • Experience operating or overseeing vehicles/equipment used in cleansing services.

  • A full, clean UK driving licence.

  • Experience supervising or supporting street cleansing or waste services.
