Help shape a cleaner, greener South Derbyshire.

Are you an experienced operational leader with a passion for delivering excellent public services, developing people and making a real difference to local communities?

South Derbyshire District Council is looking for a motivated, forward-thinking and enthusiastic Streetscene Manager to lead Street Scene operational teams.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a service that takes genuine pride in the environment it maintains, with a strong track record of achievement and a clear ambition to keep improving.

Join an award-winning service

South Derbyshire is home to some exceptional parks and green spaces, and we are incredibly proud of the teams who look after them.

In 2026, six of our parks and green spaces achieved the prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising the high standards of maintenance, environmental management and community engagement delivered across the district.

From the much-loved Maurice Lea Memorial Park and Eureka Park to Swadlincote Woodlands, Cadley Park and our wider public open spaces, our teams play a vital role in creating places where people can relax, exercise, enjoy nature and take pride in their surroundings.

Our environmental achievements extend beyond our parks. The Council has also been recognised with a Silver International Green Apple Award for its partnership conservation work supporting the return of the rare Purple Emperor butterfly to Derbyshire.

Alongside investment in recreational facilities, play areas, tree planting and biodiversity, these achievements demonstrate our commitment to protecting and improving South Derbyshire's environment for future generations.

We have a great foundation to build upon, and we're looking for someone who can help take our services even further.

About the role

As Streetscene Manager, you will provide visible, hands-on leadership across our Grounds Maintenance and Street Cleansing operations.

Working closely with the Operations Manager, you will lead and develop Team Leaders and frontline employees, ensuring our services remain safe, efficient, responsive and focused on delivering excellent outcomes for residents.

You will play a key role in:

  • Leading, motivating and developing our operational teams, creating a positive and accountable working culture.
  • Managing the day-to-day delivery of grounds maintenance, horticultural activities, street cleansing and environmental services.
  • Maintaining and improving standards across our streets, parks, public spaces and communities.
  • Driving continuous improvement through effective resource planning, performance management and smarter working practices.
  • Promoting a strong health and safety culture across all operational activities.
  • Supporting effective financial management and ensuring resources deliver value for money.
  • Coordinating operational responses to severe weather, flooding and other emergency incidents.

About you

We are looking for an approachable, confident and proactive manager who enjoys being involved in frontline service delivery and supporting teams to succeed.

You will bring strong operational management experience, excellent people management skills and the ability to balance competing priorities in a busy service environment.

Experience in grounds maintenance, street cleansing, environmental services or a similar operational setting would be particularly valuable.

Most importantly, you will be someone who leads by example, encourages new ideas, takes pride in delivering high standards and recognises the important contribution frontline employees make to their communities.

Why join South Derbyshire?

This is more than an opportunity to manage a service. It is an opportunity to make a visible difference to the places where people live, work and spend their leisure time.

You will join a dedicated team with a record of achievement, an organisation committed to environmental improvement and a role where your leadership, ideas and experience can help shape the future of our frontline services.

If you are passionate about people, proud of the environment around you and ready for your next management challenge, we would love to hear from you.

Help us build on our success and keep South Derbyshire a place to be proud of.
